The growing interest in multiple commitments among researchers and practitioners is evinced by the greater attention in the literature to the broader concept of work commitment. This includes specific objects of commitment, such as organization, work group, occupation, the union, and one's job. In the last several years a sizable body of research has accumulated on the multidimensional approach to commitment. This knowledge needs to be marshaled, its strengths highlighted, and its importance, as well as some of its weaknesses made known, with the aim of guiding future research on commitment based on a multidimensional approach. This book's purpose is to summarize this knowledge, as well as to suggest ideas and directions for future research. Most of the book addresses what seems to be the important aspects of commitment by a multidimensional approach: the differences among these forms, the definition and boundaries of commitment foci as part of a multidimensional approach, their interrelationships, and their effect on outcomes, mainly work outcomes. Two chapters concern aspects rarely examined--the relationship of commitment foci to aspects of nonwork domains and cross-cultural aspects of commitment foci--that should be important topics for future research. Addressing innovative focuses of multiple commitments at work, this book: *suggests a provocative and innovative approach on how to conceptualize and understand multiple commitments in the workplace; *provides a thorough and updated review of the existing research on multiple commitments; *analyzes the relationships among commitment forms and how they might affect behavior at work; and *covers topics rarely covered in multiple commitment research and includes all common scales of commitment forms that can assist researchers and practitioners in measuring commitment forms.

Employee engagement is the holy grail for every business leader. Its described in a variety of ways but generally defined as when employees fully invest emotionally, mentally, and physically so they focus on achieving the organisations objectives. Getting commitment is an elusive aspect to managing people. The business organisations are aware of the importance of employee commitment and its role in motivating employees. As easy it is to obtain it can also be lost. Gaining or losing employee commitment, from one day to the next, happens quickly. Employee commitment is one of several central themes that appear in every employee. As a word, commitment is present in the majority of employee literature. But what is commitment? Organisational commitment is the bond employees experience with their organisation. Broadly speaking, employees who are committed to their organisation generally feel a connection with their organisation, feel that they fit in and, feel they understand the goals of the organisation. The added value of such employees is that they tend to be more determined in their work, show relatively high productivity and are more proactive in offering their support. When things go well, employee engagement leads to employee retention and balancing behaviour-reinforcing performance rewards. During economic distress business leaders are concerned about commitment and managing negative employees expectations. The level of commitment relates to several aspects such as satisfaction, turnover, cognitive resonance between different hierarchical levels, and performance on the job. The complexity in and importance of understanding employee commitment thus makes it a key feature of managerial task. This monograph examines the body of knowledge from past research to reflect on such commitment and issues in harnessing it. Handbook of Employee Commitment provides a conversant review of theory and research relevant to employee commitment in the workplace, drawing its value for both employers and employees and identifying crucial factors in its development, maintenance or decline. In todays competitive world every organisation is facing new challenges regarding sustained productivity and creating committed workforce. Now a days no organisation can perform at peak levels unless each employee is committed to the organisations objectives. Hence, it is important to understand the concept of commitment and its feasible outcome. This book is valuable for managers and management consultants and researchers involved in the latest developments in the field as well as for international scholars who will benefit from its guidance on how to approach research in inimitable cultures.

Commitment in the workplace has been an enduring concern of managers at all levels. On the basis of extensive research and practical work with corporations, Stephen L. Fink establishes a sound basis (Commitment Diagnostic Instrument) for diagnosing essential characteristics of employee commitment and, importantly, offers practical guidance for remedying situations in which commitment levels constitute problems. Fink examines the differing experiences of corporations with dissimilar personnel approaches. His analysis involves consideration of common, but highly relevant, factors including age, length of service, and educational level. Types of commitments are differentiated, for example, commitment to co-workers is distinguished from commitment to one's specific performance. Managers are guided on the approaches conducive to establish, monitor, and strengthen commitment as a means to a qualitatively better and more productive workplace.

How many of your employees would stay with you if they were offered another job? CIPD research shows that even employees who are basically satisfied with their lot no longer trust their employer. After years of redundancies, zero bonuses, minimal pay rises and promotion freezes how are you going to get the levels of commitment you need from a workforce that no longer trusts you?How do we get these disgruntled, demotivated â¬" some might say just plain disgusted â¬" employees to take an active and hopefully enthusiastic part in your business?Johnson offers practical remedies for rebuilding the psychological contract and regaining commitment.Johnson argues that although trust has vanished from the workplace there are ways to develop a new psychological contract between employer and employee. This book offers practical, down-to-earth solutions that human resource and general managers can use to re-energise the employees (and themselves!).
