This detailed volume contains embryo culture techniques that should inspire embryologists to consider comparative studies. The species included in this volume represent a broad range of taxa, whose embryos have vastly different culture requirements and developmental characteristics. Among the species described in this volume, significant differences exist in the rates of cell division, the timing of the maternal to embryonic transition, the relative lipid content of the cytoplasm, the sensitivity of the embryo to specific environmental ions, the preferred nutrients and associated metabolic pathways used by the embryo, the timing and mechanisms of early lineage specification, the presence or absence of embryonic diapause, and the time from fertilization to implantation. Written for the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series, chapters include introduction to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Comparative Embryo Culture: Methods and Protocols serves as an ideal aid for scientists seeking another species whose embryos have evolved a unique mechanism that could provide a valuable, comparative context for experimentation.

A Comparative Methods Approach To The Study Of Oocytes And Embryos written by Joel D. Richter and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-01 with Science categories.

Over the past twenty years, biologists have made remarkable progress in understanding each step as a single fertilized egg develops into a mature organism, and the research draws on a tremendous array of experimental techniques. A Comparative Methods Approach to the Study of Oocytes and Embryos takes a unique approach to the field, providing a hands-on guide to three of the most important experimental subjects--frogs, fruitflies, and mice. By collecting reliable techniques in a single volume, the book is both an invaluable resource for new researchers and an ideal platform for comparing these seemingly disparate biological systems. The volume contains work from many leaders in the field and spans research in genetics, molecular and cellular biology, and morphology. It includes methods for oocyte and embryo culture, microinjection, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, time-lapse microscopy, intracellular ion measurements, and embryonic dissections.

Because of the recent advances in embryo modeling techniques, and at the request of the Office of Science Policy in the Office of the Director at the National Institutes of Health, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, hosted a 1-day public workshop that would explore the state of the science of mammalian embryo model systems. The workshop, which took place on January 17, 2020, featured a combination of presentations, panels, and general discussions, during which panelists and participants offered a broad range of perspectives. Participants considered whether embryo model systems - especially those that use nonhuman primate cells - can be used to predict the function of systems made with human cells. Presentations provided an overview of the current state of the science of in vitro development of human trophoblast. This publication summarizes the presentation and discussion of the workshop.

Assisted reproductive technologies have had a profound impact on biomedical research through transgenic animals, food supply and production, as wells as genetic gain of domestic species, and treatment of human infertility. While significant advances in embryo culture have occurred over the last few decades. In Embryo Culture: Methods and Protocols, expert researchers in the field detail many of the methods which are now commonly used to study human embryo culture. These include emerging methods and the impact of embryo culture on epigenetics and offspring health is presented to set the stage for future research and laboratory application involving embryo culture. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular BiologyTM series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and key tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Authoritative and practical, Embryo Culture: Methods and Protocols seeks to aid scientists in the further study of this crucially important field of embryology and assisted reproductive technologies.

Embryo cleavage experiences a series of critical events and remarkable epigenetic modifications, especially morphological change and gene expression. The development of current assisted reproductive technology has created some new observations and novel discoveries in cleavage embryos. This book updates some new technologies and methods on the study of cleavage embryos to select high-quality embryos for transfer and improve embryo implantation and pregnancy. Major contents include embryo cleavage morphokinetics based on time-lapse imaging, gene expression of cleavage embryo and noninvasive assessment, and improving embryo cleavage technology. Thus, this book will greatly add new information for embryologists to select good-quality embryos for transfer to improve human embryo transfer pregnancy rate.
