Abstract: Competitive intelligence has been defined as competitor insights that are based on secondary and primary data (Jaworski, MacInnis and Kohli 2002). The majority of U.S. based companies regularly use competitive intelligence (Lavelle 2001; Outward Insights 2005). However, many companies realize no or limited benefits from competitive intelligence (Clark and Montgomery1996; Outward Insights 2005). In spite of its widespread usage, few academic studies have examined competitive intelligence. Competitive intelligence may be of little use without the capabilities to value, assimilate and apply it. This study adapts the absorptive capacity (Cohen and Levinthal 1990) theoretical perspective to the competitive intelligence context with the competitive absorptive capacity construct. Competitive absorptive capacity is defined as the capabilities to recognize the value of new competitor information, assimilate that information, and effectively apply it to commercial ends. This study develops the competitive absorptive capacity construct and a scale to measure it. This study empirically examines the antecedents and consequences of competitive absorptive capacity. A market environment characterized by competitive intensity will influence a firm to engage in competitive intelligence generation. Competitive intelligence generation, a learning orientation, and prior related knowledge are antecedents to competitive absorptive capacity. Competitive absorptive capacity has a significant positive relationship with innovation. Innovation, with the notable exception of radical innovation has a significant positive relationship with relative advantage. Finally, the studies results indicate that competitive advantage has a significant positive relationship with a subjective business unit performance measure which, in turn, has a significant positive relationship with an objective measure of firm performance.

Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, German Graduate School of Management and Law gGmbH, language: English, abstract: Dynamic capabilities and their impact on a firm’s performance are both topics that are gaining increasing attention in business literature and in practice. The concept of dynamic capabilities refers to organizational features or practices that a firm has developed to cope with a changing and uncertain market environment in a better way than its competitors and consequently sustain its competitive advantage. This book contributes to theory and practice in several domains. Drawing on the literature about customer value, service-dominant logic and dynamic capabilities, it investigates how the absorptive capacity approach can be used to (co-)create customer value in order to achieve sustainable competitive advantage in a service-dominant environment. The book provides guidance to practitioners by building up a framework that reflects how absorptive capacity can be used to co-create value in a B2B relationship. The case of the fictional company TurboIT, an SAP service and solution provider, illustrates the practical application of this concept.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject Business economics - Trade and Distribution, grade: 1,3, Leipzig Graduate School of Management, language: English, abstract: Today’s business environment is changing rapidly, with product variety increasing and the customization of products growing. Companies have to react to these developments by adopting strategies which allow a closer reaction to customers’ individual needs as well as an increasing operational efficiency in internal processes. Mass customization is a concept that meets this challenge with offering customized goods at nearly mass production efficiency. However, recently the phrase of ‘mass customization’ has been the subject of much hype and became a buzzword. In 2005, the management consulting company Bain & Company has investigated that mass customization is already one of the 25 most popular management tools. Thus it seems obvious that within the last years the number of companies introducing own mass customization projects has been significantly increasing.6 Especially in the sport shoes industry the term produces a lively interest and can be seen as a trend: Nike, Adidas and Reebok are running a mass customization initiative today. Also Puma, as the fourth major brand in global sportswear market, recently introduced its ‘Mongolian Shoe BBQ’ called project, enabling customers to design their own shoes in the internet and selected retail stores. By having a deeper look at all these companies it becomes evident, that mass customization is frequently implemented ineffectual and rarely part of a strategic plan. Instead, the technique is often only used as a marketing gimmick, “neglecting the needs and possibilities of dealing with single customer orders.” The fact conversely, that mass customization offers much more potential than its utilization as a marketing instrument, is not only proven by theoretical literature. Also several successful practical examples – sometimes from entirely different industries – demonstrate the wide range of opportunities for pursuing a mass customization strategy.

This book gathers an important research process in the field of project management, addressing a current issue for the challenges posed by highly competitive environments, such as the relationship of projects with knowledge, more specifically with external knowledge. For this purpose, it uses the dynamic absorptive capacity, a concept widely used in the scientific literature but little explored in project management. The book also presents a practical tool to determine the magnitude of the dynamic absorptive capacity. This makes it possible to establish a baseline to initiate a process of continuous improvement, which provides the opportunity to improve the competitiveness of the organization based on proper knowledge management. In this same sense, the model presented in this document contains a series of intervals that offer the possibility for the organization to catalog its results qualitatively.

While abundant literature evaluates how the adoption of proactive environmental strategies affects corporate performance, we have little understanding of the organizational mechanisms that link such strategies to competitive advantage. It is therefore unclear how environmental strategies relate to other management strategies that could lead to a competitive advantage. In this paper, we analyze the organizational capabilities that underlie a firm's ability to generate competitive advantage from the adoption of proactive environmental strategies. We develop and test a model where absorptive capacity facilitates the development of proactive environmental strategies that result in competitive advantage. Results from a survey of 157 German chemical firms strongly support the model.
