Current standard numerical methods are of little use in solving mathematical problems involving boundary layers. In Robust Computational Techniques for Boundary Layers, the authors construct numerical methods for solving problems involving differential equations that have non-smooth solutions with singularities related to boundary layers. They pres

There has been a considerable progress made during the recent past on mathematical techniques for studying dynamical systems that arise in science and engineering. This progress has been, to a large extent, due to our increasing ability to mathematically model physical processes and to analyze and solve them, both analytically and numerically. With its eleven chapters, this book brings together important contributions from renowned international researchers to provide an excellent survey of recent advances in dynamical systems theory and applications. The first section consists of seven chapters that focus on analytical techniques, while the next section is composed of four chapters that center on computational techniques.

With emphasis on modern techniques, Numerical Methods for Differential Equations: A Computational Approach covers the development and application of methods for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations. Some of the methods are extended to cover partial differential equations. All techniques covered in the text are on a program disk included with the book, and are written in Fortran 90. These programs are ideal for students, researchers, and practitioners because they allow for straightforward application of the numerical methods described in the text. The code is easily modified to solve new systems of equations. Numerical Methods for Differential Equations: A Computational Approach also contains a reliable and inexpensive global error code for those interested in global error estimation. This is a valuable text for students, who will find the derivations of the numerical methods extremely helpful and the programs themselves easy to use. It is also an excellent reference and source of software for researchers and practitioners who need computer solutions to differential equations.

In the wake of the computer revolution, a large number of apparently uncon nected computational techniques have emerged. Also, particular methods have assumed prominent positions in certain areas of application. Finite element methods, for example, are used almost exclusively for solving structural problems; spectral methods are becoming the preferred approach to global atmospheric modelling and weather prediction; and the use of finite difference methods is nearly universal in predicting the flow around aircraft wings and fuselages. These apparently unrelated techniques are firmly entrenched in computer codes used every day by practicing scientists and engineers. Many of these scientists and engineers have been drawn into the computational area without the benefit offormal computational training. Often the formal computational training we do provide reinforces the arbitrary divisions between the various computational methods available. One of the purposes of this monograph is to show that many computational techniques are, indeed, closely related. The Galerkin formulation, which is being used in many subject areas, provides the connection. Within the Galerkin frame-work we can generate finite element, finite difference, and spectral methods.

This book fills a gap between theory-oriented investigations in PDE-constrained optimization and the practical demands made by numerical solutions of PDE optimization problems. The authors discuss computational techniques representing recent developments that result from a combination of modern techniques for the numerical solution of PDEs and for sophisticated optimization schemes. The book offers readers a combined treatment of PDE-constrained optimization and uncertainties and an extensive discussion of multigrid optimization. It provides a bridge between continuous optimization and PDE modeling and focuses on the numerical solution of the corresponding problems.

This book is an introduction to computational mechanics, proceeding from basic computational tools to advanced computational procedures and applications. Emphasis is placed on the numerical techniques and how they form the bases for algorithms. Numerous worked examples in structural mechanics, heat transfer, fluid flow, and biomechanics are given with the numerical codes to illustrate how the methods are applied. A concluding section addresses advanced applications in such areas as finite volume methods and biomechanics.
