In our increasingly mobile world the ability to access information on demand at any time and place can satisfy people's information needs as well as confer on them a competitive advantage. The emergence of battery-operated, low-cost and portable computers such as palmtops and PDAs, coupled with the availability and exploitation of wireless networks, have made possible the potential for ubiquitous computing. Through the wireless networks, portable equipments will become an integrated part of existing distributed computing environments, and mobile users can have access to data stored at information servers located at the static portion of the network even while they are on the move. Traditionally, information is retrieved following a request-response model. However, this model is no longer adequate in a wireless computing environment. First, the wireless channel is unreliable and the bandwidth is low compared to the wired counterpart. Second, the environment is essentially asymmetric with a large number of mobile users accessing a small number of servers. Third, battery-operated portable devices can typically operate only for a short time because of the short battery lifespan. Thus, clients are expected to be disconnected most of the time. To overcome these limitations, there has been a proliferation of research efforts on designing data delivery mechanisms to support wireless computing more effectively. Data Dissemination in Wireless Computing Environments focuses on such mechanisms. The purpose is to provide a thorough and comprehensive review of recent advances on energy-efficient data delivery protocols, efficient wireless channel bandwidth utilization, reliable broadcasting and cache invalidation strategies for clients with long disconnection time. Besides surveying existing methods, this book also compares and evaluates some of the more promising schemes.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in all industrial countries have a great need for technical and scientific data and product and market information. SMEs also produce useful information of mutual benefit for themselves. A proper and healthy development of SMEs in developing, as well as in many industrialized countries in Europe and elsewhere will require a number of support services, among which the development of infrastructural information services is a key element. Rapid progress in information technologies has reduced the cost and increased the availability of powerful workstations, personal computers and new communication facilities. This has created new opportunities for using these and other appropriate technologies to conceive practical information services for SMEs. This book contains the proceedings of an international seminar on distri- buted database systems for SMEs held in Beijing, People's Republic of China, in May 1989. The seminar was organized as a joint undertaking of the Institute of Scientific and Technological Information of China (ISTIC), the United Nations Centre for Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) and the Commission of the European Communities (CEC). Recommendations cover operational concepts, methodology and technologies to be applied in the various stages of infrastructural evolution. Dr. Ganzhorn is a member of the United Nations Advisory Committee on Science and Technology for Development, a body composed of 28 personalities of repute with diverse backgrounds from all over the world. He is a former Director of Science and Technology of IBM Europe, an Honorary Professor at the University of Karlsruhe and a former President of the German Physical Society. Dr. Faustoferri is an Information Systems Officer of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). At the time of the Beijing seminar, he was an Associate Expert with the United Nations Centre for Science and Technology for Development (CSTD).

The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) of the National Science Foundation (NSF) communicates its science and engineering (S&E) information to data users in a very fluid environment that is undergoing modernization at a pace at which data producer dissemination practices, protocols, and technologies, on one hand, and user demands and capabilities, on the other, are changing faster than the agency has been able to accommodate. NCSES asked the Committee on National Statistics and the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board of the National Research Council to form a panel to review the NCSES communication and dissemination program that is concerned with the collection and distribution of information on science and engineering and to recommend future directions for the program. Communicating Science and Engineering Data in the Information Age includes recommendations to improve NCSES's dissemination program and improve data user engagement. This report includes recommendations such as NCSES's transition to a dissemination framework that emphasizes database management rather than data presentation, and that NCSES analyze the results of its initial online consumer survey and refine it over time. The implementation of the report's recommendations should be undertaken within an overall framework that accords priority to the basic quality of the data and the fundamentals of dissemination, then to significant enhancements that are achievable in the short term, while laying the groundwork for other long-term improvements.
