This volume assesses approaches to the construction of computer vision systems. It shows that there is a spectrum of approaches with different degrees of maturity and robustness. The useful exploitation of computer vision in industry and elsewhere and the development of the discipline itself depend on understanding the way these approaches influence one another. The chief topic discussed is autonomy.True autonomy may not be achievable in machines in the near future, and the workshop concluded that it may be more desirable - and is certainly more pragmatic - to leave a person in the processing loop. The second conclusion of the workshop concerns the manner in which a system is designedfor an application. It was agreed that designers should first specify the required functionality, then identify the knowledge appropriate to that task, and finally choose the appropriate techniques and algorithms. The third conclusion concerns the methodologies employed in developing vision systems: craft, engineering, and science are mutually relevant and contribute to one another. The contributors place heavy emphasis on providing the reader with concrete examples of operational systems. The book is based on a workshop held as part of the activities of an ESPRIT Basic Research Action.

It is widely recognized that the complexity of parallel and distributed systems is such that proper tools must be employed during their design stage in order to achieve the quantitative goals for which they are intended. This volume collects recent research results obtained within the Basic Research Action Qmips, which bears on the quantitative analysis of parallel and distributed architectures. Part 1 is devoted to research on the usage of general formalisms stemming from theoretical computer science in quantitative performance modeling of parallel systems. It contains research papers on process algebras, on Petri nets, and on queueing networks. The contributions in Part 2 are concerned with solution techniques. This part is expected to allow the reader to identify among the general formalisms of Part I, those that are amenable to an efficient mathematical treatment in the perspective of quantitative information. The common theme of Part 3 is the application of the analytical results of Part 2 to the performance evaluation and optimization of parallel and distributed systems. Part 1. Stochastic Process Algebras are used by N. Gotz, H. Hermanns, U. Herzog, V. Mertsiotakis and M. Rettelbach as a novel approach for the struc tured design and analysis of both the functional behaviour and performability (i.e performance and dependability) characteristics of parallel and distributed systems. This is achieved by integrating stochastic modeling and analysis into the powerful and well investigated formal description techniques of process algebras.

Information Technology is having an increasing influence on medicine. This can be readily observed by anybody visiting a hospital or consulting a doctor, or even by going to the chemist. A range of new medical instruments, new scanners, new on-line diagnostics as well as more effective distribution methods all increasingly contain IT elements that enable new more effective medical tools and services. But there is also a lot going on "behind the scenes", at the research and development level, that will greatly influence the medical tools and services of tomorrow. In this respect, Esprit, the European Commission's IT research program, has been supporting a range of research and development projects that are contributing to the opening of new avenues in the medical field.
