Use computer technology to complement and strengthen your special education program! This book provides practical information, case examples, theory, and a critical summary of applied research about how computer technology can be used to support and improve special education and related services. With Computers in the Delivery of Special Education and Related Services, you'll learn how technology can be used to facilitate an individualized and collaborative approach to learning. Topics of discussion include innovative instruction, consultation, family collaboration, curriculum-based assessment, and professional development. Computers in the Delivery of Special Education and Related Services is a valuable resource in which special services providers can find ways to use computers to enhance individualized instruction and the problem-solving skills of their students, as well as avenues of professional collaboration and support. Computers in the Delivery of Special Education and Related Services presents thoughtful discussions that examine: how computer software can be used in the assessment of students’progress within specific curricula how students can use the Internet to discuss class projects with experts in a process known as ”telementoring” how software can help a school-based consultation team through specific aspects of the problem-solving process, including data collection, intervention selection, team decision documentation, and follow-up ways to use the Internet to create new types of learning communities for students and professionals, extending Vygotsky's notion of ”zone of proximal development” (ZPD) to the community level the advantages and disadvantages of using email with the intention of complementing and strengthening face-to-face collaboration the aspects of home computer use that address a student's special needs the importance of understanding the family's values, expectations, and cultural background Computers in the Delivery of Special Education and Related Services reflects the editors’hope that creative applications of technology will soon transcend the nagging stereotypes of computers (they isolate students, they're too difficult to use, that they lack the flexibility to treat people as individuals). Then computers will be viewed as partners in the process of special education--machines that enhance current practices and open new vistas for learning and education.

Computer-Based Technology for Special and Multicultural Education is a comprehensive textbook for integrating computer technology into the classroom. Experienced contributors discuss the growing role of technology in teaching students with exceptional learning needs. Unlike the competition, this textbook addresses classroom technology through multiple lenses: special and multicultural education. Special education teacher candidates, at all levels, will benefit from this in-depth coverage of history, terminology, and research in computer based technology. This background will help readers determine how and when to use technology for the most effective educational experience. Topics include using the combination of computer hardware and specific software programs to deliver evidence-based teaching strategies as supplemental instruction. Computer-Based Technology breaks down teaching methods by addressing the most critical academic areas: reading, writing, mathematics, S.T.E.M., and social studies. Authors acknowledge the differences in each academic area, and how to best incorporate technology into each of these classrooms. Authors use the term "exceptional learners" throughout the text, which describes not only special education students, but also the experience of students with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. These students are faced with unique circumstances and challenges that affect their educational processes. Digital technology has radically altered the way in which we live and work, but has not had a substantial impact on education. Ubiquitous Computing in Education explores the educational potential of ubiquitous computing initiatives that make digital tools available to students and teachers. Combining theory, research, and practice, this volume paints a broad picture of the field of ubiquitous computing in education, which focuses on the availability of digital tools for teachers and students to use anywhere and anytime to support teaching and learning. The book illustrates how to use theory and research to enhance technology integration, teaching practices, and student achievement. The significance of ubiquitous computing for teaching and learning is highlighted, as the text discusses why it is important, what it looks like, what the research tells us about it, and how ubiquitous computing can work in different types of learning environments today and in years to come. This book is of interest to researchers and graduate students in educational technology, as well as teachers, administrators, policymakers, and industry leaders who can use the text to make essential decisions related to their respective roles in education.

This study examined the creative uses of computers in elementary schools and their impact on student's confidence and self-esteem, student-student interaction, student-teacher interaction, male and female students, classroom management, the role of the teacher, special education, teacher training, teachers not involved in the study, and curricular areas such as computer literacy, learning Logo as a programming language, problem-solving and problem-creation, mathematics, oral communication, reading and writing, the arts, and values and the individual and society. Findings are based on intensive examinations of real classrooms over a 2-year period. A total of 433 students in 18 classrooms that involved 13 different teachers were studied; of these, 5 teachers and 40 students were involved in the study for 2 years. Classrooms had 1 to 5 computers over the entire school year, or students had access to a computer laboratory. Logo and word processing were studied extensively; the use of a graphics tablet and Musicland were explored for short periods. Findings indicate that the creative use of computers fosters the development of independent and original thinking and that an environment that encourages exploration leads to extensive social interaction among students; in addition, students become more willing to express, refine, or revise their ideas. A significantly greater proportion of students experienced an increase in their confidence and self-esteem if their teacher was able to give them autonomy over their learning. The impact on students' attention span and cognitive development in the special education classes was also significant. Appendices and selected references are provided. (Author/JB)
