18 destacados investigadores analizan detenidamente más de 30 piezas de teatro latinoamericanas sobre la Conquista estrenadas entre 1897 y 2010. El abanico abarca la mayoría de los países latinoamericanos, de México hasta Argentina, pasando por América Central, Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Perú, Chile y Brasil. Con ello, este volumen llena un vacío en la investigación, al dirigir la mirada no solo a México, sino más allá de esta "Conquista por antonomasia". Los resultados aquí presentados demuestran una presencia prolífera del tema entre los estrenos teatrales de toda América Latina a lo largo del siglo XX y las primeras décadas del XXI; por consiguiente, más allá de la fecha conmemorativa del Quinto Centenario del Descubrimiento en 1992. Junto a personajes tan notorios como Colón, Cortés y Las Casas, aparecen también figuras con proyección regional. Amén de su papel como lugar de la memoria, la tematización dramatúrgica de la Conquista que la ocupación violenta de un territorio por invasores que se consideran superiores, más “civilizados”, “desarrollados” o que son simplemente más fuertes y codiciosos de los recursos materiales del subsuelo sigue suponiendo un estímulo atractivo para la imaginación. Hoy en día, en tiempos de la globalización, de los mercados neoliberales por un lado y los movimientos fundamentalistas por otro, el tema sirve a menudo como ámbito de proyección para traer a colación constelaciones actuales de encuentros entre culturas heterogéneas, así como de imposición y negociación de relaciones de poder.

Argentina is the only country in the Americas that has successfully erased the presence of Indians, Africans, and mestizos from its national story. Official documents, reports, and censuses have largely omitted any references to the country's non-European inhabitants, mirroring official policies that once included the extermination of indigenous peoples and continued to encourage Europeanization well into the twentieth century. In Captive Women, Susana Rotker exposes this concerted act of forgetting by looking at a historical phenomenon that has been expunged from the national record: the widespread kidnapping of white women by Argentine Indians in the nineteenth century. Captivity narratives form a major part of the early colonial literature of the United States, but Argentina has no such tradition. These narratives contradict Argentina's carefully shaped self-image, one historically based on the absence of aboriginal peoples and the impossibility of miscegenation. Captive Women uses close andimaginative readings of military documents, government treaties, travel journals, essays, and memoirs to explore the foundations of Argentina's strategies of silence and its negation of uncomfortable historical realities.
