In The Foundations of Arithmetic, Gottlob Frege contended that the difference between concepts and objects was absolute. He meant that no object could be a concept and no concept an object. Benno Kerry disagreed; he contended that a concept could be an object, and that therefore the difference between concepts and objects was only relative. In this book, Jolley aims to understand the debate between Frege and Kerry. But Jolley's purpose is not so much to champion either side; rather, it is to utilize an understanding of the debate to shed light on the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein-and vice versa. Jolley not only sifts through the debate between Frege and Kerry, but also through subsequent versions of the debate in J. J. Valberg and Wilfred Sellars. Jolley's goal is to show that the central notion of Philosophical Investigations, that of a 'conceptual investigation', is a legacy of the Frege/Kerry debate and also a contribution to it. Jolley concludes that the difference between concepts and objects is as absolute in its way in Philosophical Investigations as it was in The Foundations of Arithmetic and that recognizing the absoluteness of the difference in Philosophical Investigations provides a beginning for a 'resolute' reading of Wittgenstein's book.

On Learning written by David Scott and has been published by UCL Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-05-20 with Education categories.

This is a philosophical work that develops a general theory of ontological objects and object-relations. It does this by examining concepts as acquired dispositions, and then focuses on perhaps the most important of these: the concept of learning. This concept is important because everything that we know and do in the world is predicated on a prior act of learning. A concept can have many meanings and can be used in a number of different ways, and this creates difficulty when considering the nature of objects and the relationships between them. To enable this, David Scott answers a series of questions about concepts in general and the concept of learning in particular. Some of these questions are: What is learning? What different meanings can be given to the notion of learning? How does the concept of learning relate to other concepts, such as innatism, development and progression? The book offers a counter-argument to empiricist conceptions of learning, to the propagation of simple messages about learning, knowledge, curriculum and assessment, and to the denial that values are central to understanding how we live. It argues that values permeate everything: our descriptions of the world, the attempts we make at creating better futures and our relations with other people.

Gottlob Frege (1848–1925) was unquestionably one of the most important philosophers of all time. He trained as a mathematician, and his work in philosophy started as an attempt to provide an explanation of the truths of arithmetic, but in the course of this attempt he not only founded modern logic but also had to address fundamental questions in the philosophy of language and philosophical logic. Frege is generally seen (along with Russell and Wittgenstein) as one of the fathers of the analytic method, which dominated philosophy in English-speaking countries for most of the twentieth century. His work is studied today not just for its historical importance but also because many of his ideas are still seen as relevant to current debates in the philosophies of logic, language, mathematics and the mind. The Cambridge Companion to Frege provides a route into this lively area of research.

How To Use Objects written by Holger Gast and has been published by Addison-Wesley Professional this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-22 with Computers categories.

While most developers today use object-oriented languages, the full power of objects is available only to those with a deep understanding of the object paradigm. How to Use Objects will help you gain that understanding, so you can write code that works exceptionally well in the real world. Author Holger Gast focuses on the concepts that have repeatedly proven most valuable and shows how to render those concepts in concrete code. Rather than settling for minimal examples, he explores crucial intricacies, clarifies easily misunderstood ideas, and helps you avoid subtle errors that could have disastrous consequences. Gast addresses the technical aspects of working with languages, libraries, and frameworks, as well as the strategic decisions associated with patterns, contracts, design, and system architecture. He explains the roles of individual objects in a complete application, how they react to events and fulfill service requests, and how to transform excellent designs into excellent code. Using practical examples based on Eclipse, he also shows how tools can help you work more efficiently, save you time, and sometimes even write high-quality code for you. Gast writes for developers who have at least basic experience: those who’ve finished an introductory programming course, a university computer science curriculum, or a first or second job assignment. Coverage includes • Understanding what a professionally designed object really looks like • Writing code that reflects your true intentions—and testing to make sure it does • Applying language idioms and connotations to write more readable and maintainable code • Using design-by-contract to write code that consistently does what it’s supposed to do • Coding and architecting effective event-driven software • Separating model and view, and avoiding common mistakes • Mastering strategies and patterns for efficient, flexible design • Ensuring predictable object collaboration via responsibility-driven design Register your product at informit.com/register for convenient access to downloads, updates, and corrections as they become available.

At The Altar Of Concepts written by Patrick J. O'Connell and has been published by CreateSpace this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-07-30 with categories.

At the Altar of Concepts starts with objects, their rise, a comparison with images, eventually arriving at the notion of concepts. Unlike images and many objects, concepts are this thing of greater permanence, people if they are aware of it or not, are deeply attached to them. Relationships, democracy, economic security are all concepts. People seek them out, they prize them, they think they understand them. Some people even worship them. To worship something here means that figuratively, people give themselves to some ritual or practice whereby some special recognition is accorded to something - a being or an object. Because of their devotion to significant themes i.e. concepts, some people need to go to the altar to obtain them. People worship science, they worship a beautiful woman, or they worship some object. But these are all special activities. This special activity is said to take place at an altar, where an exceptional aura exists, and the goddess of concepts presides. Hence the title of the book - At the Altar of Concepts.
