The concept of genius has been a subject of much speculation and debate since the eighteenth century. However, in a world obsessed with creative genius and the possibilities of the human imagination, the actual workings of the creative process and its psychological underpinnings remain a mystery. In On Creativity, a group of experts seeks to unlock this enigma. The essays of Sudhir Kakar, Günter Blamberger and Weihua Niu provide a cross-cultural perspective, comparing historical and actual concepts of creativity in the East and the West. The essays of Patrick Mahony, James Kaufman and Margaret Boden offer an interdisciplinary perspective, demonstrating the successes and limits of the psychoanalytical and psychological approaches to understanding creativity while also discussing cognitive biology as the seemingly most promising approach to solving the puzzle of the creative mind. Brilliant, lucid and thought-provoking, these essays examine and illumine the reasons that compel us to innovate further.

Concerning Creativity written by John H. Berthrong and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-10-01 with Philosophy categories.

This work examines the philosophies and theologies of three thinkers—Chu Hsi, Alfred North Whitehead, and Robert C. Neville—separated by time, space, and culture. In so doing John H. Berthrong provides a suggestive and successful comparison of creativity as a cross-cultural theme while introducing Neo-Confucianism as a sophisticated dialogue partner with modern Western speculative philosophy and theology. Creativity lies at the heart of the discourse of Chu Hsi (1130–1200) and Alfred North Whitehead. For both, creativity emerges as an attempt to illustrate the organic unity of the world without resorting to an appeal to a source for creativity beyond the concrete actuality of the cosmos. Subtle critics such as Robert C. Neville argue that process thought is fatally flawed because Whitehead separated creativity from the other crucial elements of his system. By interjecting the Chinese Neo-Confucian synthesis of Chu Hsi, it is possible to show how creativity can be re-integrated into process discourse as creative synthesis.

On Creativity written by David Bohm and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-01 with Creation (Literary, artistic, etc.) categories.

David Bohm is widely recognized for his significant contributions to the discussion on the relationship between art and science. On Creativityis a collection of essays by Bohm, which are all related directly to the nature of creativity - primarily the latent creativity in the human mind, but interestingly enough, to the creativity in nature and the universe at large as well. A significant portion of the material draws overtly from Bohm's perceptions as a practising scientist - his notions of what underlies a paradigm shift, or how laws of nature, theories and hypotheses are perceived, rationalized and axiomatized. However, the novelty and appeal of Bohm's views of these processes is the suggestion that the work of the visual artist is remarkably similar to that of the scientist. He explores these similarities at length and even goes so far as to suggest that the creative processes of the scientist and the artist are at work in every person. On Creativityis a fascinating read for Bohm aficionados and for those interested in exploring the relation between creativity in art and science.

CREATIVITY HAS become a popular slogan in contemporary education and society. We are urged continually to be creative with respect to all our endeavours - to be creative writers, creative cooks, creative teachers, creative thinkers, creative lovers. Ascribing creativity has become one of the principal means of praising, approving, and commending. Yet in the process of becoming a universal term of positive evaluation, the concept of creativity has tended to lose its connection with its origins. We have forgotten that creativity has to do with creating, that it is connected with great achievements and quality productions. And as a consequence of this lapse of memory, most attempts to foster creativity in educational practice have been misleading at best and dangerous at worst. We have come to settle for the encouragement of certain personality traits at the expense of the encouragement of significant achievement - and this in the name of creativity. If we are not clear about what is meant by creativity, we may end up sacrificing creativity precisely in the process of trying to foster it. This book is an attempt to be clear about creativity. The Context For the poet is an airy thing, a winged and a holy thing; and he cannot make poetry until he becomes inspired and goes out of his senses and no mind is left in him. l Plato If creativity and its growth are to be viewed scientifically, creativity must be defined in a way that permits objective observation and measurement . . .

The motivation underlying our development of a "handbook" of creativity was different from what usually is described by editors of other such volumes. Our sense that a handbook was needed sprang not from a deluge of highly erudite studies calling out for organization, nor did it stem from a belief that the field had become so fully articulated that such a book was necessary to provide summation and reference. Instead, this handbook was conceptualized as an attempt to provide structure and organization for a field of study that, from our perspective, had come to be a large-scale example of a "degenerating" research program (see Brown, Chapter 1). The handbook grew out of a series of discussions that spanned several years. At the heart of most of our interactions was a profound unhappiness with the state of research on creativity. Our consensus was that the number of "good" works published on creativity each year was small and growing smaller. Further, we could not point to a journal, text, or professional organization that was providing leadership for the field in shaping a scientifically sound framework for the development of research programs in creativity. At the same time, we were casting about for a means of honoring a dear friend, E. Paul Torrance. Our decision was that we might best be able to honor Paul and influence research on creativity by developing a handbook designed to challenge traditional perspectives while offering research agendas based on contemporary psychological views.

Dynamic Perspectives On Creativity written by Ronald A. Beghetto and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-17 with Education categories.

This edited volume provides a venue for scholars whose work challenges the typical, static conceptions, and methods of studying creativity. More specifically, the book will serve as an effort to introduce more dynamic definitions, conceptions, and approaches for studying creativity in the context of educational practice. By doing so, it feeds the strong contemporary need for more dynamic conceptions of creativity in educational settings. This is particularly important given the fast evolution of modern society and the widespread consensus that efforts to develop creative potential should be democratized -- extending well beyond the boundaries of the gifted subset and the walls of the classroom. This work recognizes that more dynamic perspectives on creativity are necessary for understanding its complexity, value, and meaning in educational contexts.

Perspectives On Creativity written by Lynn DellaPietra and has been published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Creative ability categories.

Perspectives on Creativity explores the topic of creativity from multiple viewpoints, including those of the philosopher, psychologist, neuroscientist, therapist, educator, and artist. The book is organized around a series of themes, beginning with a consideration of the nature of creativity and how it can be cultivated, with special attention to how creativity can be fostered in the classroom and work settings. The second section presents qualitative studies of artists and asks what we can learn about creativity from the lives and work of these individuals, such as whether there exists a relationship between creativity and mental illness. The third section examines the healing power of creativity within the therapeutic milieu, from the relatively more well-known music and art therapy to the less familiar drama therapy. The final section of the book explores the relationship between creativity and the brain and presents studies to address whether the brains of creative individuals function differently from those of the less creative. What makes this book unique is that the topic of creativity is considered in an interdisciplinary way from both theoretical and applied perspectives, making it appealing to individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.
