This book explores the use of technology to detect, predict and understand social cues, in order to analyze and prevent conflict. Traditional human sciences approaches are enriched with the latest developments in Social Signal Processing aimed at an automatic understanding of conflict and negotiation. Communication—both verbal and non-verbal, within the context of a conflict—is studied with the aim of promoting the use of intelligent machines that automatically measure and understand the escalation of conflict, and are able to manage it, in order to support the negotiation process. Particular attention is paid to the integration of human sciences findings with computational approaches, from the application of correct methodologies for the collection of valid data to the development of computational approaches inspired by research on verbal and multimodal communication. In the words of the trade unionist Pierre Carniti, "We should reevaluate conflict, since without conflict there is no social justice." With this in mind, this volume does not approach conflict simply as an obstacle to be overcome, but as a concept to be fully analyzed. The philosophical, linguistic and psychological aspects of conflict, once understood, can be used to promote conflict management as a means for change and social justice.

This collection advances the study of context-dependent characteristics of argumentative discourse by examining a variety of media genres in which text and image (and other semiotic modes) combine to create meaning. The chapters have been written by an international group of senior and junior scholars researching multimodal argumentation in the last two decades. In each chapter, a specific approach to argumentation and rhetoric is combined with insights from visual studies, metaphor theory, scientific visualization, cognitive science, semiotics, conversation analysis, or (documentary) film theory in order to explain how multimodal genres function argumentatively and rhetorically. Together the chapters present a state-of-the-art in the analysis of multimodal argumentation in such diverse genres as print advertisements, news photographs, scientific illustrations, political cartoons, documentaries, film trailers, political TV advertisements, public debates, and political speeches. The volume will be of interest to advanced students and scholars in argumentation studies, rhetoric, and multimodal communication.

Conflict And Representation In Online Communication written by Taiwo, Rotimi and has been published by IGI Global this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-06-24 with Social Science categories.

Online communication plays a central role in shaping public discourse, social movements, and interpersonal dynamics in the digital age. The anonymity and immediacy of online interactions can both empower voices and amplify hostility, making conflict more volatile and widespread. At the same time, digital platforms have become vital spaces for marginalized groups to share experiences, build communities, and advocate for change. Understanding the psychological, cultural, and social dynamics of internet behavior is critical to promoting respectful dialogue, reducing harm, and ensuring inclusive digital environments. Conflict and Representation in Online Communication examines the evolving nature of online communication, focusing on how digital platforms shape opinion expression, conflict, and representation. Through interdisciplinary insights, it explores the psychological, social, and cultural dynamics that influence internet behavior and offers strategies for fostering inclusive online discourse. Covering topics such as critical discourse analysis, multimodal representation, and technology usage attitude, this book is an excellent resource for researchers, academicians, students, policymakers, educators, professionals, and more.

Multiculturalism As Multimodal Communication written by Alin Olteanu and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-14 with Literary Criticism categories.

This highly readable book develops a numanistic, and specifically semiotic approach to multiculturalism. It reveals how semiotics provides fresh and valuable insights into multiculturalism: in contrast to the binary logic of dualistic philosophy, semiotic logic does not understand the value of truth in rigid terms of ‘true’ or ‘false’, ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ only. The value of truth resides in meaning, which is a dynamic, evolutionary phenomenon, rooted, nevertheless, in factuality. Drawing on recent developments in biosemiotics, the book presents a theoretical approach to multiculturalism, regarding the lives of people living in multicultural environments. Rather than analyzing political or economic phenomena, it offers a semiotic analysis of multiculturalism and discusses its educational implications. It also invites readers to regard learning as a phenomenon of ecological sign growth and to understand multiculturalism along the same lines. As such, itbrings together the life and social sciences and the humanities in a unified perspective, in an approach fitting postmodernism. Developing a postmodern philosophy for contemporary non-experts, which allows distancing from political discourse in favor of a posthumanistic stand, where altruism is seen as an opportunity, not a threat, this book appeals to a wide readership, from scholars seeking state-of-the-art theories to general readers looking for a thought-provoking and enlightening read.
