Conflict And Multimodal Communication written by Francesca D'Errico and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-03-17 with Computers categories.

This book explores the use of technology to detect, predict and understand social cues, in order to analyze and prevent conflict. Traditional human sciences approaches are enriched with the latest developments in Social Signal Processing aimed at an automatic understanding of conflict and negotiation. Communication—both verbal and non-verbal, within the context of a conflict—is studied with the aim of promoting the use of intelligent machines that automatically measure and understand the escalation of conflict, and are able to manage it, in order to support the negotiation process. Particular attention is paid to the integration of human sciences findings with computational approaches, from the application of correct methodologies for the collection of valid data to the development of computational approaches inspired by research on verbal and multimodal communication. In the words of the trade unionist Pierre Carniti, "We should reevaluate conflict, since without conflict there is no social justice." With this in mind, this volume does not approach conflict simply as an obstacle to be overcome, but as a concept to be fully analyzed. The philosophical, linguistic and psychological aspects of conflict, once understood, can be used to promote conflict management as a means for change and social justice.

This volume aims to fill two gaps in pragmatic research into English as a lingua franca (ELF): the investigation of conflict talk and the incorporation of a multimodal perspective into the analysis of ELF interactions. To this end, multimodal conversation analysis is used, combined with the perspective of politeness theory. The author shows how interactants use multimodal resources to manage competitive overlaps, disagreement, and third-party complaints in casual ELF conversations among friends. In doing so, the notion of cooperativeness is re-examined, and the appropriateness of an intercultural approach to analyzing multimodal resources in ELF interactions is demonstrated.

Today even the war and conflict coverage of 24-hour news networks is subject to heavy promotion and part of the networks’ advertising and branding campaigns. These commercial aspects of news production, however, seem to oppose concepts of journalistic quality. This study analyses claims of journalistic quality and ‘high concept’ in conflict coverage promotion spots and how they are linked to better understand the ideological complexes of CNN International and Al Jazeera English. The findings show an equal number of quality and ‘high concept’ claims with differences in the nature of the claims between the two networks. Strong patterns are found in quality and ‘high concept’ claims of both 24-hour television news networks. The largest number appears in the visual mode. The research also shows that analysing this kind of media text needs to be multimodal and that a social semiotic approach is appropriate for analysing claims-making and linking in conflict coverage promotional spots.

Communication Conflict And The Management Of Difference written by Stephen W. Littlejohn and has been published by Waveland Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Littlejohn and Domenici invite readers to engage in a thoughtful dialogue about human difference, conflict, and communication. Drawing on numerous examples from their work in mediation, the authors discuss a variety of practical tools, models, and theories to help analyze conflictwhy it occurs and how communication skills help avoid downward spirals into harmful relationships. Communication competence can move discussions away from harmful interactions and empower parties to expand their options. Effectively managing differences allows conflict, in whatever context, to become a positive resource rather than a barrier. The appendix provides a wealth of information in a succinct format. It discusses basic communication skills; introduces a number of alternative dispute resolution methods, including negotiation, mediation, facilitation, collaboration, and public engagement; and concludes with practical information about dialogue as an important approach to differences.

Social Influence Power And Multimodal Communication written by Isabella Poggi and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-11-30 with Psychology categories.

Social Influence, Power, and Multimodal Communication reveals how democratic leaders and dictators exploit multimodal communication to convince or seduce their audiences, using words, voice, gesture, face, gaze, and posture to boast about their merits or insult and ridicule rivals. Poggi and D'Errico explore questions such as what is charisma, and how do we perceive it in a leader? And how do politicians display their dominance over opponents, or discredit them in TV debates and social media? Starting from a sociocognitive model of social interaction, observational studies reveal the rhetoric of words, hands, and faces, explaining how to see beyond their literal meanings, while experimental studies test their uses and persuasive effects. The authors affirm that multimodality helps others to influence us through displays of dominance, and by undermining our power through comments, insults, irony, ridicule, and parody. The devices of social influence and its multimodal management are illuminated, giving readers insight into how people influence others’ lives by using body language and verbal communication, either explicitly or in subtle but inexorable ways. This fascinating text is a superb resource for students of psychology, communication, pragmatics, and political sciences, as well as for school teachers, politicians, spin doctors, active citizenship workers, and anyone seeking to understand how communicative power is managed, both in politics and everyday social contexts.

Engaging Communication In Conflict written by Stephen W. Littlejohn and has been published by SAGE this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-08-30 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Written from the authors′ experience in conflict intervention in their private consulting practice, Engaging Communication in Conflict uses a communication perspective to address insights and methods in private mediation, small group facilitation, system design, large-scale interventions, and public-issue management. This book offers encouragement for a world sometimes overwhelmed by conflict and presents an expanded and pragmatic definition of peace. Authors Stephen Littlejohn and Kathy Domenici discuss numerous methods and principles in conflict resolution. They explore transformative mediation, the team mediation system, assessment and evaluation, systemic design, gaming methodology, issue framing and public deliberation, study circles, dialogue groups, and many other interventions. These methods and principles are adapted from a spectrum of theory and practice and include fresh and innovative approaches designed by the authors and their colleagues. The book is based on a coherent theoretical orientation, drawing heavily from the theories of the coordinated management of meaning, system theory, social constructionism, and transformative discourse. While these theories are detailed in the Appendix, the book is highly pragmatic in orientation, with numerous case examples and "how-to" information.
