Philosophers have traditionally concentrated on the qualities that make human beings different from other species. In Beast and Man Mary Midgley, one of our foremost intellectuals, stresses continuities. What makes people tick? Largely, she asserts, the same things as animals. She tells us humans are rather more like other animals than we previously allowed ourselves to believe, and reminds us just how primitive we are in comparison to the sophistication of many animals. A veritable classic for our age, Beast and Man has helped change the way we think about ourselves and the world in which we live.

Theory And Practice In The Interdisciplinary Production And Reproduction Of Scientific Knowledge written by Olga Pombo and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-01-10 with Science categories.
This book addresses the urgent need for a large and systematic analysis of current interdisciplinary (ID) research and practice. It demonstrates how ID is essentially a cognitive phenomenon, something different from the frivolous and inconsequential attempt of trying to overcome the disciplinary competencies and exigencies. By ID, the authors show that it is a manifestation of the transversal rationality that underlies current scientific activity. It is the very progress of specialized disciplines that requires interdisciplinary new research practices and new forms of articulation between domains, something that has a strong impact on the traditional disciplinary structure of scientific and educational institutions. Divided into two parts, the book presents a conceptual framework as well as several case studies on ID practices. The book aims at covering three main themes. It contributes to the stabilization of ID meaning and characterizes the main ID theorizations which have been proposed until now. It builds an innovative and broad understanding of the several ID determinations as an essentially cognitive phenomenon and of its institutional implications at the level of disciplinary structures and curricular organization. Finally, it distinguishes and maps the diversity of ID procedures and practices which are being used and tested by contemporary scientific and educational institutions. This book is addressed to philosophers, scientists and every one interested in science production and reproduction, including science teaching.

Managing Complexity is the first book that clearly defines the concept of Complexity, explains how Complexity can be measured and tuned, and describes the seven key features of Complex Systems: ConnectivityAutonomyEmergencyNonequilibriumNon-linearitySelf-organisationCo-evolution The thesis of the book is that complexity of the environment in which we work and live offers new opportunities and that the best strategy for surviving and prospering under conditions of complexity is to develop adaptability to perpetually changing conditions. An effective method for designing adaptability into business processes using multi-agent technology is presented and illustrated by several extensive examples, including adaptive, real-time scheduling of taxis, see-going tankers, road transport, supply chains, railway trains, production processes and swarms of small space satellites. Additional case studies include adaptive servicing of the International Space Station; adaptive processing of design changes of large structures such as wings of the largest airliner in the world; dynamic data mining, knowledge discovery and distributed semantic processing. Finally, the book provides a foretaste of the next generation of complex issues, notably, The Internet of Things, Smart Cities, Digital Enterprises and Smart Logistics.

Renegotiating Disciplinary Fields In The Life Sciences written by Alessandro Minelli and has been published by MDPI this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-02-24 with Science categories.
Recent and ongoing debates in biology and the philosophy of biology reveal a widespread dissatisfaction with traditional explanatory frameworks. There are also problems with the current definitions or circumscriptions of key concepts such as gene, species, and homology, and even of whole disciplinary fields within the life sciences, e.g. developmental biology. These contrasting views are arguably a symptom of the need to revisit traditional, unchallenged partitions between the specialist disciplines within the life sciences. In the diversity of topics addressed and approaches to move beyond the current disciplinary organization, the five essays in this volume will hopefully stimulate further exploration towards an improved articulation of life sciences.

Convictions Without Truth written by Robert Schehr and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-05-03 with Law categories.
Convictions Without Truth sets out to determine whether and to what extent science and law may coexist in an institutional relationship that truthfully generates individualization through application of forensic testimony for charges relating to violations of criminal law. In the first two chapters, readers are exposed to contemporary unscientific forensic practices as juxtaposed to the evidentiary standard announced by the United States Supreme Court in Daubert v. Merrill Dow Pharmaceuticals, as well as scientific requirements for validity and reliability of expert witness testimony. The remaining chapters provide an explanation for retention of existing, though faulty, forensic practices by way of analysis of path dependency, the fixation of belief, and neuro and cognitive psychology. Through immanent critique and unmasking, the book deconstructs prevailing forensic practices through application of existing published documentation. The final chapter addresses the fixation of belief from the perspective of neuropsychology and cognitive psychology. Readers will gain an understanding of the current concerns relating to application of contemporary forensic practices; current case law and federal rules guiding the introduction of expert witness testimony; and why it is that despite widely recognized concerns raised from within and outside of the criminal legal system, application of unscientific forensic practices continues. The book also shows how the criminal legal system is experiencing a paradigm shift due to dialectical juxtaposition of existing unscientific forensic practices with contemporary science. Readers are shown that because of its continued reliance upon unscientific forensic practices, the criminal legal system reveals its hegemonic commitment to social control through its willingness to accept "satisfying" as opposed to "truthful" results that generate wrongful convictions. Convictions Without Truth will be of particular interest to students, academics, and practitioners working within the criminal legal field. It will also appeal to those wanting to know more about forensics and criminal law.

Every person has to reconcile how to solve the many problems that arise daily in their lives. These questions are structured like the hypotheses scientists use to enter into their investigations. The Humaniverse Guide will immerse the reader by first demystifying the platform of science and show them the tools and methods scientists use to solve their problems (answer their hypotheses). Then The Humaniverse Guide engages the reader as the research scientist, forensic investigator, jury and judge in an actual investigation; that of the extraterrestrial hypothesis. Along its course, The Humaniverse Guide will raise their level of knowledge, inquiry, and critical thinking to help them make sense of their environment in beneficial ways they never were aware of before. The reader will own these new tools and larger skill set. This can later help in applications to their own life situations and to make successful decisions. With these themes, The Humaniverse is situated for a global audience. What sets The Humaniverse apart from other recent titles—such as Ancient Alien Ancestors by Will Hart, Timothy Good’s Earth: An Alien Enterprise; Forbidden Science: From Ancient Technologies to Free Energy as edited by J. Douglas Kenyon, and John B. Alexander’s UFOs: Myths, Conspiracies and Realities—is that the reader will acquire an acute awareness of the history of science, learn its methods, then use their new tool sets the same way scientists do. That user will also analyze a more extensive and pragmatic set of raw data and evidence facts observed and collected from millions of witnesses from all walks of life throughout recorded human history. This is offered to help bridge the gaps in understanding and comfort level that currently exist among the general public and both the science communities and the extraterrestrial hypothesis. The abundant utilities the reader/user can obtain from The Humaniverse Guide help make those everyday decisions easier to obtain and better.
