Constantine and the Council of Nicaea plunges students into the theological debates confronting early Christian church leaders. Emperor Constantine has sanctioned Christianity as a legitimate religion within the Roman Empire but discovers that Christians do not agree on fundamental aspects of their beliefs. Some have resorted to violence, battling over which group has the correct theology. Constantine has invited all of the bishops of the church to attend a great church council to be held in Nicaea, hoping to settle these problems and others. The first order of business is to agree on a core theology of the church to which Christians must subscribe if they are to hold to the "true faith." Some will attempt to use the creed to exclude their enemies from the church. If they succeed, Constantine may fail to achieve his goal of unity in both empire and church. The outcome of this conference will shape the future of Christianity for millennia. Free supplementary materials for this textbook are available at the Reacting to the Past website. A World's Christian Convention A.D. 325 with a Life of Constantine. "The words Council, Synod, and Convention are synonymous. There were many Councils held in Christendom before that of Nice; but they were not Ecumenical, that is, general or universal." "The Council of Nice set the example of trying to compel Christians to adopt its modes of faith. That plan was not so fair as those pursued by the great philosophers." This book contains information on the life of Constantine "being decidedly the most conspicuous figure in the picture.

Before Constantine rose to power as the Roman emperor, the empire followed polytheistic beliefs. Any deviation from this tradition, particularly embracing Christianity, was met with severe punishment including imprisonment, torture, and execution. Christians were especially targeted as their faith was considered a "cult" at the time. However, after Constantine embraced Christianity, there was a significant shift. In 325 CE, Constantine summoned early Christian leaders to Nicaea (modern-day &304;znik in Turkey) to deliberate on matters pertaining to the governance and doctrines of a unified Christian church This gathering aimed to establish a single, cohesive, and catholic church that would unify the Roman world under one dominant religion. In the game, students immerse themselves in the theological debates that defined the challenges and disagreements within the church leadership, addressing fundamental aspects of Christian beliefs. Can the bishops assembled at the council resolve these issues, or will the church face division or dissolution? The outcome of this conference holds the power to shape the trajectory of Christianity for centuries to come.

CHRISTIANITY BECOMES LEGAL AND PERSECUTIONS STOP BUT HERESY THREATENS THE YOUNG CHRISTIAN CHURCH. IT IS UP TO THE BISHOPS TO SETTLE THE CRISIS. It is the night of October 27, A.D. 312 and Constantine, Caesar Augustus of the Western Roman Empire, stands outside the gates of Rome to conquer the city and become the supreme ruler. But he has doubts about victory. He has fewer soldiers than his enemy and Rome is surrounded by a great wall. He falls asleep before the battle when suddenly a brilliant light shines in his eyes. Jesus Christ appears before him and tells him that he will be victorious if he fights under the sign of the cross. When he awakes he orders his soldiers to place the cross on their shields and helmets, and march under the Christian banner. He wins the battle, becomes supreme ruler, stops Christian persecutions, and makes Christianity a legal religion. But a heresy emerges among Christians. The question whether Jesus is God, or inferior and subordinate to God the Father, divides the Christians creating a theological crisis, which threatens to weaken the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine invites the bishops to his imperial palace in Nicaea to settle the dispute. The bishops affirm the Divinity of Jesus and condemn the heresy, at what is known as the Council of Nicaea. Anastasia accompanies her uncle bishop on his journey from Rome to Nicaea. In the splendor of the imperial palace in Nicaea she finds forbidden love with a Greek slave Demetrius. But a Roman commander, Valerius, becomes obsessed with her and abducts her, threatening to kill her if she refuses to be his wife. She must escape from her captor and find a way to free the slave she loves. Only then will she find happiness.
