CHRISTIANITY BECOMES LEGAL AND PERSECUTIONS STOP BUT HERESY THREATENS THE YOUNG CHRISTIAN CHURCH. IT IS UP TO THE BISHOPS TO SETTLE THE CRISIS. It is the night of October 27, A.D. 312 and Constantine, Caesar Augustus of the Western Roman Empire, stands outside the gates of Rome to conquer the city and become the supreme ruler. But he has doubts about victory. He has fewer soldiers than his enemy and Rome is surrounded by a great wall. He falls asleep before the battle when suddenly a brilliant light shines in his eyes. Jesus Christ appears before him and tells him that he will be victorious if he fights under the sign of the cross. When he awakes he orders his soldiers to place the cross on their shields and helmets, and march under the Christian banner. He wins the battle, becomes supreme ruler, stops Christian persecutions, and makes Christianity a legal religion. But a heresy emerges among Christians. The question whether Jesus is God, or inferior and subordinate to God the Father, divides the Christians creating a theological crisis, which threatens to weaken the Roman Empire. Emperor Constantine invites the bishops to his imperial palace in Nicaea to settle the dispute. The bishops affirm the Divinity of Jesus and condemn the heresy, at what is known as the Council of Nicaea. Anastasia accompanies her uncle bishop on his journey from Rome to Nicaea. In the splendor of the imperial palace in Nicaea she finds forbidden love with a Greek slave Demetrius. But a Roman commander, Valerius, becomes obsessed with her and abducts her, threatening to kill her if she refuses to be his wife. She must escape from her captor and find a way to free the slave she loves. Only then will she find happiness.

Constantine and the Council of Nicaea plunges students into the theological debates confronting early Christian church leaders. Emperor Constantine has sanctioned Christianity as a legitimate religion within the Roman Empire but discovers that Christians do not agree on fundamental aspects of their beliefs. Some have resorted to violence, battling over which group has the correct theology. Constantine has invited all of the bishops of the church to attend a great church council to be held in Nicaea, hoping to settle these problems and others. The first order of business is to agree on a core theology of the church to which Christians must subscribe if they are to hold to the "true faith." Some will attempt to use the creed to exclude their enemies from the church. If they succeed, Constantine may fail to achieve his goal of unity in both empire and church. The outcome of this conference will shape the future of Christianity for millennia. Free supplementary materials for this textbook are available at the Reacting to the Past website. History Of The First Council Of Nice written by Dean Dudley and has been published by Book Tree this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-07 with Religion categories.

Includes the Life of Constantine, who came to power in ruthless fashion and orchestrated the Council. He approved Christianity in 313 for the entire Roman Empire after murderous plots brought him to power. This included the elimination of close relatives who might otherwise challenge his crown. This was the first major council in Christendom, taking place in A.D. 325. It endorsed some erroneous concepts that were ultimately accepted after those in opposition were forced to leave the Council. Reveals how Christianity as we know it today was created during a political power struggle, and some important facets of the religion were created to serve political agendas rather than the truth.
