This book is about how people (we refer to them as practitioners) can help guide participants in creating representations of issues or ideas, such as collaborative diagrams, especially in the context of Participatory Design (PD). At its best, such representations can reach a very high level of expressiveness and usefulness, an ideal we refer to as Knowledge Art. Achieving that level requires effective engagement, often aided by facilitators or other practitioners. Most PD research focuses on tools and methods, or on participant experience. The next source of advantage is to better illuminate the role of practitioners-the people working with participants, tools, and methods in service of a project’s larger goals. Just like participants, practitioners experience challenges, interactions, and setbacks, and come up with creative ways to address them while maintaining their stance of service to participants and stakeholders. Our research interest is in understanding what moves and choices practitioners make that either help or hinder participants’ engagement with representations. We present a theoretical framework that looks at these choices from the experiential perspectives of narrative, aesthetics, ethics, sensemaking and improvisation and apply it to five diverse case studies of actual practice. Knowledge is constructed through our bodies, which exist within and are affected by place. Place permeates everything we know, and in turn, is redefined by everything we do. The ongoing globalization of our culture and economy has turned attention increasingly outward, and has devalued local community. Art educators can help students re-engage with their local environments by employing a place-based pedagogy that connects knowledge construction to the physical realities of students' lives. Particularly as students in the United States experience the homogenizing effects of a national curriculum, the arts provide rare opportunities for students to consider the unique characteristics of their own experience, and their own place. To help students engage physically and meaningfully in art making, this study suggests a teaching practice framed through place-based education that utilizes an embodiment of knowledge. An embodied knowledge is one that is formed by physically gathering information from one's surrounding environment through the use of the body. Through a review of relevant literature and a nine-week case study, this research sought answers to the following questions: In what ways is a student's understanding of place influenced through the embodiment of knowledge? In what ways is my art teaching practice affected by teaching, observing, and participating in embodied experiences of place? In what ways can exploring place through the embodiment of knowledge benefit pedagogies of art education? By conducting action research through a qualitative case study, I helped design and teach a mapping curriculum with a fifth grade science class at an independent urban school. This curriculum focused on mapping through embodied experience, and included activities such as mapping the classroom and the school courtyard, and orienteering both on school grounds and at an off-campus site. The phenomenological data gathered throughout this study showed that students were able to engage with ideas of place through mapping activities, particularly as these activities allowed students to construct knowledge of distance, space, and terrain through embodied experiences. Suggestions offered by this study include further work with the fifth grade science curriculum to frame place not only as a source of data for maps, but as a central component of knowledge construction. This action research changed my art teaching practice to include a deeper consideration of epistemological experience as art. Lastly, this study suggests great potential for pedagogies of art education that support a relevant, student-centered curriculum through embodied experiences of place.
