A emergência da categoria agricultura familiar e dos agricultores familiares como personagens é recente na história brasileira. Especialmente nas últimas décadas, vem ocorrendo um processo de construção da categoria agricultura familiar enquanto modelo de agricultura e como identidade política de grupos de agricultores. Para isso, contribuiu um conjunto de atores que, segundo sua forma e seus interesses, ajudaram a definir o que se entende por agricultura familiar no país. Partindo de uma investigação sobre a gênese sociopolítica dos grupos que formam a agricultura de base familiar no país, o livro percorre as experiências organizativas autônomas desses grupos e os conflitos de posição que experimentaram ao desafiarem as organizações da classe dominante rural do país da grande lavoura, como era chamado no passado, e do agronegócio, nos dias atuais. Argumenta-se que foram três conjuntos de atores construtores e difusores da categoria agricultura familiar e dos seus sujeitos políticos – os agricultores familiares. Este processo teve início em meados da década de 1980 e alcançou seus resultados mais expressivos de proposição e divulgação a partir da década de 1990. O primeiro conjunto de atores é composto pelo debate acadêmico, que recolocou luz sobre o lugar que a agricultura familiar ocupou no desenvolvimento dos países do capitalismo avançado e as condições de precariedade que ela encontrou historicamente no Brasil. O segundo é representado pelas ações do Estado que contribuíram para definir o sentido oficial da categoria agricultura familiar e as políticas públicas que a fortaleceram. O terceiro, nem por isso menos importante, é composto pelo sindicalismo dos trabalhadores rurais (que passa a ser mais identificado com a agricultura familiar) e pelos movimentos sociais do campo, que, mesmo sendo formados por forças políticas diversas, conseguiram organizar projetos de um novo lugar para a agricultura familiar no país.

Globalised neoliberal capitalism continues to entrench inequality, environmental degradation, and social division. The Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), or Brazilian Landless Movement, offer us a route beyond any theoretical impasse or reluctant acquiescence to the enduring social and economic status quo. Through time spent working and living among the MST many of their defining features and activities are mapped. These include land occupations; the organisation of work co-operatively; the practising of agro-ecology; implementation of gender quotas for community leadership positions; and the application of principles based upon the ‘common good’. Much of framing scholarship focuses either exclusively on the analysis of words or of visuals. This book aims to address this gap by proposing a six-step approach to the analysis of verbal frames, visual frames and the interplay between them—an integrative framing analysis. This approach is then demonstrated through a study investigating the way words and visuals are used to frame people living with HIV/AIDS in various communication contexts: the news, public service announcements and special interest publications. This application of integrative framing analysis reveals differences between verbal frames and visual frames in the same messages, underscoring the importance of looking at these frames together.
