Contemporary Design Education In Australia written by Lisa Scharoun and has been published by Intellect Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-04 with Education categories.

This book offers a range of approaches to teaching higher education design students to learn to design collaboratively and creatively, through transdisciplinary, multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary and interdisciplinary learning experiences. It highlights that the premise of traditional disciplinary silos does little to advance the competencies needed for contemporary design and non-linear career paths. It makes the point that higher education should respond to the impacts of a changing society, including fluctuating market demands, economic variations, uncertainties, and globalization. Chapters highlight approaches that address this changing landscape, to meet student, industry and societal needs and reflect a range of design education contexts in which the authors have taught, with a focus on experiences at the Queensland University of Technology, Australia, but also including collaborations and comparative discussions elsewhere in Australia and globally, spanning Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and the United States. The book is positioned not as a definitive theoretical model for transdisciplinary design education but instead as a collective of chapters in which many forms of learning are explored through overarching themes of curriculum design and experiential and authentic learning and collaboration, transforming professional identities, and design cultures.

The Material City written by Ron Ringer and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05 with Architecture categories.

This book explores new themes and ideas that relate directly to the millions of Australians who live and work in our nation's capital cities. For, it is here in the increasingly densified suburbs and business districts that we are experiencing first hand what Australia's growing population means. Multi-res, low, medium and high-rise buildings are becoming the norm in areas that once housed the populace in single-storey dwellings. Until recently, office towers rarely exceeded 20-storeys, although this is changing. However, by international standards our planning laws either prevent or discourage truly monumental buildings on a scale seen in many other countries. In a single decade there has been an emphatic shift towards a bolder, more confronting reality that our cities must adapt and (literally) rise to the occasion. For with nowhere else to spread, Sydney, for example, must increase density through infill or multi-storey buildings. The growing pains are obvious as government, local council and urban planners struggle to deal with the inadequacies of public transport infrastructure, community disquiet and possibly a reluctance to grasp the true significance of rapidly increasing populations. The Material city: density and design in contemporary Australian architecture seeks to explore these issues through 50 selected case studies and 20 essays and feature articles. These represent the ideas of many of Australia's leading architects whose work is informed by limitations of space, yet whose designs seek to meet the need for public and private space, infrastructure, the workplace and home.

Designing Schools written by Kate Darian-Smith and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-13 with Architecture categories.

Designing Schools explores the close connections between the design of school buildings and educational practices throughout the twentieth century to today. Through international cases studies that span the Americas, Europe, Africa and Australia, this volume examines historical innovations in school architecture and situates these within changing pedagogical ideas about the ‘best’ ways to educate children. It also investigates the challenges posed by new technologies and the digital age to the design and use of school places. Set around three interlinked themes – school buildings, school spaces and school cultures – this book argues that education is mediated or framed by the spaces in which it takes place, and that those spaces are in turn influenced by cultural, political and social concerns about teaching, learning and the child.

An inquiry concerning art, craft, and design education in Western Australia that was undertaken by the Western Australian Post Secondary Education Commission is considered, as are the resulting recommendations. Attention is directed to the existing system and the need/demand for art, craft, and design education, as well as issues affecting the following: The Western Australian Institute of Technology, the Technical Education Division, teacher education in the colleges, issues affecting the universities, and other issues, such as the transition from study to work for artists/craftsmen. It is recommended that precareer education in art, craft, and design continue to be provided by the Western Australian Institute of Technology and the Technical Education Division of the Education Department of Western Australia; and that avocational programs in these fields be made widely available in education institutions and community organizations. A major recommendation is that the Technical Education Division's vocational programs in art, craft, and design be brought together in a new College of Art, Craft, and Design to be established within the Perth Cultural Centre. In addition, it is recommended that the possibility be explored of establishing a Department of Fine Arts at the University of Western Australia to provide degree and postgraduate courses in art history. Background information on the inquiry, including submissions received and reports consulted, are included. (SW)
