Argomento centrale di questo numero è il paesaggio, in collegamento con il tema del territorio agrario. Il punto nodale della riflessione è la necessità di una nuova elaborazione di paesaggio che veda protagonista il mondo rurale. Nel corso della trattazione, il problema della tutela e progettazione del paesaggio agrario è analizzato da vari punti di vista. In particolare, l’obiettivo è quello di realizzare una sorta di rivalutazione del “paese” da intendersi anche come “paesaggio”. Guardare il paese come paesaggio, afferma il curatore della rivista, serve per “introdurre uno scarto, una rottura nel meccanismo di interazione casuale che ne guida l’evoluzione”. Quindi significa dare spazio all’attività culturale (fatta di immaginazione e memoria) propria del paese, come presupposto per un nuovo agire pratico all’interno del territorio. Gli articoli contenuti nella rivista realizzano dunque un approccio ben articolato sul tema del paesaggio agrario proprio in funzione e a sostegno di tale proposito.

Il fascicolo si pone in continuità con il fascicolo Agricoltura e paesaggio, pubblicato nel 2008 a cura di Paolo Baldeschi e Daniela Poli, con l’obbiettivo di completare il quadro, in precedenza delineato, prendendo in esame l’intera complessità del territorio, indipendentemente dai diversi gradi di urbanizzazione e dalle modalità di uso. Agli interventi, articolati nelle due sezioni, Saggi, con contributi a carattere teorico e metodologico, e Ricerche, con esemplificazioni a carattere più marcatamente progettuale, si affiancano, come di consueto, le rubriche Osservatorio regionale, in cui viene dato conto delle politiche toscane sul paesaggio e vengono illustrate le ricerche in corso per la redazione di un quadro unitario dei piani strutturali toscani, e Glossario, a cui segue un’ Appendice dedicata alle strutture di didattica e di ricerca afferenti al dipartimento di urbanistica e pianificazione territoriale dell’ateneo fiorentino che si occupano di paesaggio.

This book brings together the materials of a study carried out by the Florence Faculty of Architecture in liaison with the Tuscan scientific community (five universities, research institutes and technicians from the Regional Authority) to define the methods and approaches of the new Landscape Plan. The aim was to exploit the opportunities offered by recent legislation, such as the European Landscape Convention and the Cultural Heritage and Landscape Code, in order to formulate public policies and projects designed to enhance the quality of life throughout the entire territory, both valuable and degraded. Different skills, aptitudes and passions have come together in the hope that the recent phase of planning can trigger mechanisms that stimulate the inhabitants of Tuscany to continue to produce the collective work of art that is their landscape, in the exquisitely normal manner and form that left scholars such Desplanques pleasantly perplexed when he wrote: «These people have constructed their rural landscapes as if they had no concern other than beauty.»

The clear and complete relationship that historically linked city and countryside has gradually faded more and more, up to the configuration of the current situation of urban sprawl by several parties considered unsustainable at the environmental, functional and morphological level. While an approach aimed at recovering lost physical and territorial realities may not appear very effective, it is however possible to attempt to identify paths to restore structure in the contemporary settlement layouts. A structure able to newly weave ecological, functional, morphological and symbolic relations between the urban and rural dimension. In this frame of reference, a decisive role can be played by open spaces, non-built-up natural or farming environments which constitute a resource for regaining the environmental quality of the contemporary city; for the construction of a new large system of public and collective spaces; and for the redefinition of limits, boundaries and thresholds between city and countryside. These are the topics dealt with in the book through a theoretical focus on the "middle landscape", its roots and the more recent planning experiences, and through a planning exercise on the Pistoia landscape. The aim of the volume is to attempt to provide indications and tools in order to read and design landscape with urban boundaries, today a strategic sphere for the regeneration of the contemporary city.

Con saggi di: Francesca Bruni, Daniela Buonanno, Angela D'Agostino, Mariateresa Giammetti, Maria Italia Insetti, Francesco Rispoli, Luigi Stendardo, Francesco Viola, Giovanni Zucchi La città in estensione è la premessa concettuale di una ricerca che ha mirato a definire strategie per la valorizzazione del territorio della città diffusa, individuando metodi di lettura relazionale, come layering di sistemi geografici, infrastrutturali, insediativi, agricoli. La ricerca si è occupata di due aree: la prima è individuata dalla corona dei centri minori disposti sui rilievi montuosi del Vallo di Diano (SA); la seconda è una pianura priva di limiti orografici a nord-ovest dei Campi Flegrei (NA). In entrambi i casi si impone l'idea della forma come mezzo piuttosto che come fine. Un canovaccio: una disciplina regolativa per una forma a venire non predeterminata ma aperta a costellazioni di senso. Città in estensione is the conceptual premise of a research project aiming to develop strategies for the enhancement of sprawling territories, by means of relational reading methods, such as the layering of geographical, infrastructural, settlement and agricultural systems. This study has dealt with two areas: the former lies in the Vallo di Diano (SA), and is crowned by the villages, which are laid out along the surrounding hillsides; the latter is kind of an unlimited plain to northwest of the Phlegraean Fields (NA). In both cases the point of view is the idea of the form as a means rather than as a goal. A plot: a regulating discipline for a form to come, which is not predetermined but open to sense making constellations.
