This book contributes to the current revival of dependency approaches for the analysis of global capitalism. Reflecting on contemporary uses of the “Dependency Research Program” (DRP) and a refined analytical toolkit, it makes two distinctive contributions to this revival: the analysis of new “situations of dependency”, and the understanding of the “mechanisms of dependency”. How did men become the stars of the Mexican intellectual scene? Dude Lit examines the tricks of the trade and reveals that sometimes literary genius rests on privileges that men extend one another and that women permit. The makings of the “best” writers have to do with superficial aspects, like conformist wardrobes and unsmiling expressions, and more complex techniques, such as friendship networks, prizewinners who become judges, dropouts who become teachers, and the key tactic of being allowed to shift roles from rule maker (the civilizado) to rule breaker (the bárbaro). Certain writing habits also predict success, with the “high and hard” category reserved for men’s writing and even film directing. In both film and literature, critically respected artwork by men tends to rely on obscenity interpreted as originality, negative topics viewed as serious, and coolly inarticulate narratives about bullying understood as maximum literary achievement. Las élites culturales han sido actores importantes de la historia de América Latina. Sin embargo, aunque su labor y su pensamiento son conocidos, no existía una historia de la posición de los hombres de ideas en el espacio social, de sus asociaciones y sus formas de actividad, de las instituciones y los campos de la vida intelectual, de sus debates y de las relaciones entre "poder secular" y "poder espiritual", para utilizar la distinción introducida por Comte. Hay excelentes estudios sobre casos nacionales, pero no existía, hasta el presente, una historia general. 'Historia de los intelectuales en América Latina', la importante obra dirigida por Carlos Altamirano, propone este acercamiento en una perspectiva que está también atravesada por la génesis y la historia de las transformaciones del uso del concepto de "intelectual". El primer volumen analiza la historia específica, contextualizada, de los intelectuales durante los cuatro primeros siglos de historia de América Latina. Este segundo volumen recorre una franja histórica que va de comienzos del siglo XX a la década de 1980. Los trabajos se ordenan de acuerdo con ejes temáticos diferentes: la revolución como idea o programa pero también como experiencia; la obra y la acción de los exiliados; las redes intelectuales, tejidas por encuentros, viajes y cartas; las revistas culturales como fuente para estudiar las direcciones y las batallas del pensamiento en las sociedades modernas, o como forma de agrupamiento y organización de la 'intelligentsia'; la política entendida como objeto de preocupación y de ocupación de los intelectuales; el indigenismo como movimiento ideológico moderno; las vanguardias artístico-literarias; los emprendimientos editoriales o la progresiva institucionalización académica de las ciencias sociales y de otros saberes, como la literatura o la crítica literaria.
