Currently, social and political forces contribute to public school communities that are characterized by fear, finger-pointing, and self-serving interests. In particular, these dehumanizing characteristics contribute to lack of community within schools among and between campus leaders and teacher leaders. This current reality stems from the reliance on traditional directive, command-and-control approaches to organizational development and mechanistic systems views of school communities. This research seeks to reframe the understanding and practice of organizational development by viewing it terms of collaborative, community-building within the organic systems of a campus community in order to underscore how current approaches based on directive, organizational-development practices that view campuses from a mechanistic hierarchical systems perspective result in fractured communities (Block, 2002) that dehumanize campus and teacher leaders. By understanding the contexts, conditions, and attributes of community-building conversations campus leaders will learn to engage in restorative community-building (Block, 2002) in order to rehabilitate campus communities. It attempts to find alternatives for campus leaders to engaging teacher leaders in ways other than command and control leadership and hierarchical structures. Epistemologically, this research is framed from a critical social constructivist perspective couched in dialogical learning and dialogical community theory. Data collection done through semi-structured, one-on-one interviews. A dialogical learning/community process will be used in the analysis of the data in order to problematize the process of community-building. Findings and Implications for Practice and the Literature This research is a step toward deconstructing current practice of command and control leadership in public schools and the adverse affect it has on school communities. The process for developing a culture of conversation through a theoretical framework for effective conversations is presented a more humanizing alternative based on inviting others to collaboratively share their intelligence for the practice of campus leaders engaged in organizational development and as a contribution to the organizational development literature.

In this book Michael McKenna advances a new theory of moral responsibility, one that builds upon the work of P. F. Strawson. As McKenna demonstrates, moral responsibility can be explained on analogy with a conversation. The relation between a morally responsible agent and those who hold her morally responsible is similar to the relation between a speaker and her audience. A responsible agent's actions are bearers of meaning--agent meaning--just as a speaker's utterances are bearers of speaker meaning. Agent meaning is a function of the moral quality of the will with which the agent acts. Those who hold an agent morally responsible for what she does do so by responding to her as if in a conversation. By responding with certain morally reactive attitudes, such as resentment or indignation, they thereby communicate their regard for the meaning taken to be revealed in that agent's actions. It is then open for the agent held responsible to respond to those holding her responsible by offering an apology, a justification, an excuse, or some other response, thereby extending the evolving conversational exchange. The conversational theory of moral responsibility that McKenna develops here accepts two features of Strawson's theory: that moral responsibility is essentially interpersonal--so that being responsible must be understood by reference to the nature of holding responsible--and that the moral emotions are central to holding responsible. While upholding these two aspects of Strawson's theory, McKenna's theory rejects a further Strawsonian thesis, which is that holding morally responsible is more fundamental or basic than being morally responsible. On the conversational theory, the conditions for holding responsible are dependent on the nature of the agent who is responsible. So holding responsible cannot be more basic than being responsible. Nevertheless, the nature of the agent who is morally responsible is to be understood in terms of sensitivity to those who would make moral demands of her, thereby holding her responsible. Being responsible is therefore also dependent on holding responsible. Thus, neither being nor holding morally responsible is more basic than the other. They are mutually dependent.

This research used the online experiment, the Berkana Community of Conversations (BCC), as a case study to explore learning and leadership in a self-organizing online microworld (an internet small world with rules of engagement simulating complex adaptive organization(s)). Based on theories of learning (Papert, 1996), biology of consciousness (Maturana and Varela, 1992), and integral models (Wilber, 1996), an integral methodological design, analyzed languaging and relationships as key data sources. Leadership was mapped as a continuum of behaviors that created effective processes for meaning making, action/direction and accomplishment. Meaning making was tracked in: four directions; three types of connections (exploratory, transformative and linking) and six plus levels. Self-organizing leaders: 1) initiated patterns; 2) developed patterns; and 3) created connections. The same mapping revealed the ontogeny of community learning within organization(s). System-wide order emerged through learning, tracked on four quadrant developmental scales: intentional, behavioral, cultural and social (Wilber, 1996). The microworld demonstrated: connections create meanings (patterns), create relationships, create identity. As a self-organizing microworld, BCC survived seven months; structurally coupled with its environment; and replicated itself within and outside experiment boundaries. Such a microworld can realistically replicate action-based learning situations where leaders learn new ways of leading and organizing.
