A number of different system concepts have become apparent in the broader context of embedded systems over the past few years. Whilst there are some differences between these, this book argues that in fact there is much they share in common, particularly the important notions of control, heterogenity, wireless communication, dynamics/ad hoc nature and cost. The first part of the book covers cooperating object applications and the currently available application scenarios, such as control and automation, healthcare, and security and surveillance. The second part discusses paradigms for algorithms and interactions. The third part covers various types of vertical system functions, including data aggregation, resource management and time synchronization. The fourth part outlines system architecture and programming models, outlining all currently available architectural models and middleware approaches that can be used to abstract the complexity of cooperating object technology. Finally, the book concludes with a discussion of the trends guiding current research and gives suggestions as to possible future developments and how various shortcomings in the technology can be overcome.

Augmented Materials and Smart Objects investigates the issues required to ensure technology platforms capable of being seamlessly integrated into everyday objects, particularly the requirements for integrated computation and MEMs sensors, System-in-a-package solutions, multi-chip modules, the impact of the trend towards embedded microelectronic electronics sub-systems, novel assembly techniques for autonomous MEMs sensors, as well as practical performance issues that are key to the AmI concept. Also discussed are current requirements for realizing applications-oriented examples of smart objects (e.g. smart textiles, gadgets, integration of smart systems for utility and environmental monitoring, etc); these are based upon heterogeneous systems linking networks of sensors attached to (or physically embedded in) objects with information management systems enabling collections of smart objects to collaborate to provide proactive services to the user. Finally, Augmented Materials and Smart Objects describes and discusses a number of vision statements strongly relevant to the future development of distributed embedded sensor and actuator platforms for smart objects, and ultimately Ambient Intelligence. The framework for this is the concept of Augmented Materials; these are materials with fully embedded distributed information systems, designed to measure all relevant physical properties and provide a full knowledge representation of the material; in effect, the material would "know" itself, and its current status.

Following a detailed overview of cooperative communications and the physical layer security, this book proposes relay and jammer selection schemes for security in one-way cooperative networks and to improve physical layer security in two-way cooperative networks. It also proposes a Cooperative Hybrid Self-Healing scheme to enhance the confidentiality of the data collected by UWSN. It ends with a proposal called Self-Healing Cluster Controlled Mobility (SH-CCM) scheme based on hybrid cooperation between both Proactive and Reactive peers and the sick sensors at both network and cluster levels to guarantee the security in UWSN.

This book is the second volume on Cooperative Robots and Sensor Networks. The primary objective of this book is to provide an up-to-date reference for cutting-edge studies and research trends related to mobile robots and wireless sensor networks, and in particular for the coupling between them. Indeed, mobile robots and wireless sensor networks have enabled great potentials and a large space for ubiquitous and pervasive applications. Robotics and wireless sensor networks have mostly been considered as separate research fields and little work has investigated the marriage between these two technologies. However, these two technologies share several features, enable common cyber-physical applications and provide complementary support to each other. The book consists of ten chapters, organized into four parts. The first part of the book presents three chapters related to localization of mobile robots using wireless sensor networks. Two chapters presented new solutions based Extended Kalman Filter and Particle Filter for localizing the robots using range measurements with the sensor network. The third chapter presents a survey on mobility-assisted localization techniques in wireless sensor networks. The second part of the book deals with cooperative robots and sensor networks applications. One chapter presents a comprehensive overview of major applications coupling between robots and sensor networks and provides real-world examples of their cooperation. Two other chapters present applications for underwater robots and sensor networks.

Many papers in this volume re?ect, to some degree, the active, rapid economic developmentincertaingeographicareasintheworldsuchasChina,Japan,South Korea, and EasternEurope, which demand cooperative work, particularly co- erative engineering, more than ever. New concepts and new ideas of cooperative design, visualization, and engineering have emerged to meet the higher demand resulting from the economic development in these areas. Another trend among the papers in this volume is to apply existing concepts and methods to new application areas. The emergence of new concepts can be considered as a signal of fruitful research with its maturity in the ?eld. This can be found in the papers of this year’s conference. Cooperative design, visualization, and engineering via cloud computing is a new concept presented in a group of papers in this volume. The concept of cloud has been proposed for cooperative manufacturing, large scale cooperative simulation, and visualization, etc. Applying existing concepts to new application areas or creating new me- ods based on them is a logicaldirection to takefull advantageof the cooperative design, visualization, and engineering technology. This is no doubt the best way to widen anddeepen the knowledgein the ?eld. Typicalexamples in this volume include the cooperative visualization of DNA microarray data in bioinform- ics, astrophysical simulations, natural disaster simulations, and cooperative risk assessment, etc. As the volume editor, I would like to congratulate all the authors for their research and development results, raising cooperative technology to a new level.
