Célestin Freinet (1896-1966) spent his whole life teaching in small rural elementary schools in the south of France. From this base, he pioneered an international movement for radical educational reform through cooperative learning. Freinet's Modern School Movement has provided the network through which a broad community of teachers have come to know his remarkable variety of innovative classroom approaches: the importance of creative and useful work for children learning and close observation of how they do it; a direct appreciation for the natural world; a commitment to developing appropriate technologies for the classroom; and a strong emphasis on linking school and community with the wider issues of social justice and action. Cooperative Learning and Social Change offers an introduction to a powerful pedagogical method that remains fresh and relevant today. An Our Schools/Our Selves book.

Empowering Education written by Ira Shor and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-14 with Education categories.

Ira Shor is a pioneer in the field of critical education who for over twenty years has been experimenting with learning methods. His work creatively adapts the ideas of Brazilian educator Paulo Freire for North American classrooms. In Empowering Education Shor offers a comprehensive theory and practice for critical pedagogy. For Shor, empowering education is a student-centered, critical and democratic pedagogy for studying any subject matter and for self and social change. It takes shape as a dialogue in which teachers and students mutually investigate everyday themes, social issues, and academic knowledge. Through dialogue and problem-posing, students become active agents of their learning. This book shows how students can develop as critical thinkers, inspired learners, skilled workers, and involved citizens. Shor carefully analyzes obstacles to and resources for empowering education, suggesting ways for teachers to transform traditional approaches into critical and democratic ones. He offers many examples and applications for the elementary grades through college and adult education.

Professional Development For Cooperative Learning written by Celeste M. Brody and has been published by State University of New York Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1998-07-10 with Education categories.

Cooperative/collaborative learning procedures increasingly attract great attention in school and higher education settings. This book has two main purposes: first, to enable educators to make informed decisions and choices about selecting, implementing, and evaluating cooperative learning models with respect for the differences and diversity of goals among professionals in school communities, and second, to consider the goals of teachers' professional development in the context of organizational reforms that foster systemic school change, such as the development of learning communities. The authors encourage professional development that goes beyond inservice workshops to include multi-year development and support for teachers. They advocate that schools be administered under collaborative principles so teachers can "live the experience" that they are trying to create in their own classrooms. Professional Development for Cooperative Learning describes what works for professional development in cooperative learning and how difficult it is to bring about lasting change in school settings. Brody and Davidson focus the dialogue on the nature of professional development linked to systemic changes and the successes, failures, and challenges encountered in the process.

Education Reform And Social Change written by Catherine E. Walsh and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-12 with Education categories.

Education Reform and Social Change is about addressing and changing the structures, policies, and practices of schools that differentially advantage white, middle class, native English speakers over students of color for whom English may be a second or additional language. It is also about helping people to think critically about what it is schools do and to consider more democratic, participatory, and equitable approaches. The chapters in the text provide first-hand documentation of the voices, struggles, and visions of students, parent activists, advocates, attorneys, and educators involved in educational and social change processes. It chronicles real-life efforts of people challenging the status quo and working to build a more participatory, equitable, and transformative future. The goal of this book is twofold: first, to consider the structures, policies, and practices that shape and limit educational change, and learning and teaching; and second, to document grassroots collaborative and creative efforts to change them. It offers a critical framework both for conceptualizing and for actualizing educational change. Organized into four sections, this book provides a theoretical and practical framework for thinking about educational reform and social change -- one that moves from the broader structural concerns that are embedded in policy, to case studies that document activism and collaborative efforts to change school, city, and state policies, to classroom-based directions and initiatives, and to the construction of personal and collective visions for a more democratic, equitable, and just education. Each section includes an overview of the chapters, necessary background information to help the reader contextualize what follows, and guiding questions to encourage reflective thought and engagement with the text and to invite personal linkages. Two resource sections are included at the end of the volume: "Radical Educational Reform, Critical Pedagogy, and Multicultural Education: Selected Readings and Resources" and "National Organization Networks and Resources with a Critical Perspective."

This study promotes a model of education which is collaborative and non-hierarchical. While traditional approaches to learning and teaching stress cognitive aspects of development and learning, this text advocates an approach which synthesizes the cognitive, affective and social dimensions of learning. Revealing personal and social learning as being involved with the whole school experience, the authors support the nature of learning within this radical model, and highlight key social values such as equality, respect and justice.

This is not your traditional contracts casebook. Instead, Learning Contracts provides fifty discrete "lessons" covering the full body of basic contract law, including a comparative approach to coverage of the common law, UCC Article 2 and the CISG. Each lesson includes expected learning outcomes followed by highly structured presentations, detailed explanations, illustrative examples, and helpful summaries, all designed to make the doctrine more readily accessible to students than the traditional case method. Learning Contracts includes only a few carefully selected teaching cases, thus leaving the bulk of class time for the application of newly introduced doctrinal materials to the problems at the end of each lesson. While only a few classic cases are presented as such in their original form, many others are presented in the form of examples or problems. Learning Contracts can easily be covered in its entirety in a traditional 4, 5 or 6 credit Contracts course (supplementing the text with additional problems and a wide variety of formative assessments in the latter case). However, the book is uniquely suited for a "flipped" approach to instruction in which more of the basic doctrine is delivered outside of the classroom (through the basic text, videos, discussion boards or other means of introducing doctrine online) and class time focuses far more on interactive exercises and ongoing formative assessment. Lesson-by-lesson outcomes provide further support for overall course level outcomes, while lesson-by-lesson organization provides a ready-made structure for Team-Based Learning or any other modularized learning environment. In short, Learning Contracts is specifically designed to facilitate and support today's greater focus on outcomes and assessment.

What are the challenges and needs of society that schools face? This publication focuses on the transformation of the school towards a learning organization in the society. The authors present the model of school transformation, supporting it with the theory of transformational leadership and a description of contemporary school functions in the individual and social dimensions. The main reflection is grounded in the assumption that an institution where the interactions between the present and the image of the future are particularly visible is school-essentially focused on the anticipation of emerging civilization trends and new opportunities. Modern schools are particularly expected to promote functions related to the preparation for active life, involved in creating the world in changing conditions and functions related to the universalization of life patterns while maintaining the identity and subjectivity of groups and individuals.
