This Roman play is one of Shakespeare's last tragedies, best known for its political and military themes. Its hero, Coriolanus, is a proud General who does not hesitate to show his arrogant and outspoken contempt of the Roman rabble. The Tribunes banish him and he raises an army to take his revenge on Rome. He finally concedes to the pleas of his mother to spare the city and leaves only to be publicly killed by his former allies. Peter Holland is a former Director of the Shakespeare Institute in Stratford upon Avon and President of the Shakespeare Association of America. He is a pre-eminent international scholar. His comprehensive Introduction and commentary notes open up the language, themes and ideas in this complex yet richly rewarding play for the student and teacher. The play is discussed in its historical and critical contexts and its theatrical history is analysed too.

Excerpt from The Tragedy of Coriolanus The spelling and the punctuation of the text are modern, except in the case Of verb terminations in -ea', which, when the e is silent, are printed with the apostrophe in its place. This is the general usage in the First Folio. The important contractions in the First Folio which may indicate Elizabethan pronunciation i' th for 'in the, ' 'pamp'red' for for example) are also followed. Modern spelling has to a cer tain extent been adopted in the text variants, but the original spelling has been retained wherever its peculiarities have been the basis for important textual criticism and emendation. Excerpt from Coriolanus The question why this should be so will at once tell us something about the drama. We cannot say that it shows any decline in Shakespeare's powers, though in parts it may show slackness in their use. It has defects, some of which are due to the historical material. Excerpt from The Tragedy Coriolanus He, Tragedy Of Coriolanus is the original title under which this play appears in the Folio of 1623. A right understanding Of the play requires, in the first place, an understanding of what is meant by a tragedy. The distinguishing characteristic of tragedy may be seen by contrasting it on the one hand with the drama tised story of a martyrdom, and on the other with melodrama. In such a play as Massinger's Virgin Martyr our pity is roused by the spectacle of the patiently-borne sufferings of righteous persons, crowned by their death. In a' melodrama the innocent are brought into trouble through misfortune or by the wiles Of a villain but in the end virtue triumphs, and vice receives its due punishment. N ow a tragedy so far resembles a martyr dom that its end is fatal, the hero perishes but it differs from both melodrama and martyrdom in this, that the sufferings and death of the hero, however much they may provoke our pity or stir our resentment, yet arise tfzroug/z some fault of Izz's own.* The miseries of Lear have their spring in his own obstinacy; the miseries of Macbeth in his own crime the miseries of Hamlet in his vacillation; Of Othello in his blind simplicity. The hero of tragedy is one in whose nature the elements are not so perfectly mixed, but there remains some excess This is Aristotle's canon, who defines the proper subject of tragedy as the change from good to ill fortune, neither of the excellently good nor the desperately wicked, but of some hero, illustrious and happy, occasioned by some fault (bt' dpap'rlav fwd rc'bv ev ueydh'g 6651) dife xdt eflrvxtq. Excerpt from The Tragedy of Coriolanus: Edited In this edition Of shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or grammar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in the appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions Of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpretative rather than the matter-of-fact order of scholar ship. Aesthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points Of view from which the analysis Of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be profitably undertaken. In the Notes likewise, while it is hoped that all unfamiliar expressions and allusions have been adequately explained, yet it has been thought even more important to consider the dramatic value Of each scene, and the part which it plays in relation to the whole. These general principles are common to the whole series; in detail each Editor is alone responsible for the play intrusted to him. Every volume of the series has been provided with a Glossary, an Essay upon Metre, and an Index; and Appen dices have been added upon points of special interest, which could not conveniently be treated in the Introduction or the Notes. The text is based by the several Editors on that of the 67058 edition: the only omissions made are those that are unavoidable in an edition likely to be used by young students. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Coriolanus: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Families Rome 5 insomuch that the story of Coriolanus has riow come to be generally regarded as among the most beautiful of the early Roman legends. With these questions, however, Shake speare of course did not concern himself: like others of his time, he was content to take the rambling and credulous, but lively and graphic narratives of Plutarch as veritable and authentic history. And he would have been every way justi fiable in doing this, even if the later arts of historic doubting and sifting, together with the results thereof, had been at his command. For his business as an artist was to set forth a free and life-like portraiture of human character as modified by the old Roman nationality, and clothed with the drapery of the old Roman manners. Here, then, the garrulous and gossiping old story-teller of Cheronea was just the man for him since it will hardly be questioned that his tales, whether legendary or not, are replete with the spirit and life of the times and places to which they refer. Excerpt from Plutarch's Lives of Coriolanus, Caesar, Brutus, and Antonius: In North's Translation But it is hardly necessary to observe that, in these days of fondness for Shakespeare's plays and for Shakespearian criticism, it is equally a duty and a privilege to take up North's volume once more, to select from it the most useful biographies, and to print these in a cheap, accessible, and convenient form: for it cannot be denied that the old folio editions are exceedingly cumbrous and unwieldy, containing, as they do, from 1100 to 1250 pages of large-sized paper. Excerpt from Hamlet; Coriolanus; Twelfth Night: Edited With Introductions and Notes The first thing to do, in discussing a problem, is to simplify. I propose, in this part of my Introduction, to simplify the problem of Hamlet. There is only one way. It is to consider Hamlet first and always, and to consider nothing else except in its relation to Hamlet. The play is as varied as life, but its variety cannot hide this truth that there are in it Simply two things: a Person and a Situation. This Person is Hamlet. Everything else is Situation, Circumstance, nothing more. The King and Queen, Horatio and Osric, the Players and the Clowns, the whole Polonius family, exist only for the Prince. They have, as we see them, no self-existence. Take away the Prince and their parts vanish, like spirits at cockcrow. This is the simplification of which I spoke. That it should be so easy among so much variety is the first testimony to Shakespeare's art. It is the one indispensable mark of a work of art that the centre of it is simple, however much the fulfilment may be complicated. Thus, in Hamlet, the grotesqueness of the grave-digger, the flowers of the mad girl, the fantastic finery of Osric, the pallor of the ghost and the grin of the skull are all oddities in a tangled wreath round one plain tragic figure of a man in black.'1 Let us look at this figure in its setting. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Plutarch: Containing the Main Sources of Antony Cleopatra and of Coriolanus Nowhere else in Shakespeare is there an instance of verbal borrowing at the height of dramatic intensity which is comparable to these. Even the speech of Portia to Brutus in Julius Caesar offers no parallel, for there we can see plainly the deliberate poetic handling which North's words suffered, fine though they are, before they were allowed a place in the drama. In the passages I have cited there is little evidence of any attempt at improvement; indeed, it may be held in regard to several of them that the palm belongs rather to North's prose than to Shakespeare's poetry. That this should be so is a fact worthy of all wonder and attention, for the like can be said of no other of Shakespeare's rivals or assistants.
