Excerpt from The Tragedy of Coriolanus The spelling and the punctuation of the text are modern, except in the case Of verb terminations in -ea', which, when the e is silent, are printed with the apostrophe in its place. This is the general usage in the First Folio. The important contractions in the First Folio which may indicate Elizabethan pronunciation i' th for 'in the, ' 'pamp'red' for for example) are also followed. Modern spelling has to a cer tain extent been adopted in the text variants, but the original spelling has been retained wherever its peculiarities have been the basis for important textual criticism and emendation. Excerpt from The Tragedy Coriolanus He, Tragedy Of Coriolanus is the original title under which this play appears in the Folio of 1623. A right understanding Of the play requires, in the first place, an understanding of what is meant by a tragedy. The distinguishing characteristic of tragedy may be seen by contrasting it on the one hand with the drama tised story of a martyrdom, and on the other with melodrama. In such a play as Massinger's Virgin Martyr our pity is roused by the spectacle of the patiently-borne sufferings of righteous persons, crowned by their death. In a' melodrama the innocent are brought into trouble through misfortune or by the wiles Of a villain but in the end virtue triumphs, and vice receives its due punishment. N ow a tragedy so far resembles a martyr dom that its end is fatal, the hero perishes but it differs from both melodrama and martyrdom in this, that the sufferings and death of the hero, however much they may provoke our pity or stir our resentment, yet arise tfzroug/z some fault of Izz's own.* The miseries of Lear have their spring in his own obstinacy; the miseries of Macbeth in his own crime the miseries of Hamlet in his vacillation; Of Othello in his blind simplicity. The hero of tragedy is one in whose nature the elements are not so perfectly mixed, but there remains some excess This is Aristotle's canon, who defines the proper subject of tragedy as the change from good to ill fortune, neither of the excellently good nor the desperately wicked, but of some hero, illustrious and happy, occasioned by some fault (bt' dpap'rlav fwd rc'bv ev ueydh'g 6651) dife xdt eflrvxtq. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Coriolanus This play, which I first edited in 1881, has now been very thoroughly revised on the same general plan as its predecessors In the new series. The play 1s not only one of the longest that Shake speare wrote, but the text abounds in obscurities and perplexities which, on account of the various readings and explanations adopted by the leading editors and critics, and for other reasons, demand more than usual discussion in the Notes. Excerpt from The Tragedy of Coriolanus: Edited In this edition Of shakespeare an attempt is made to present the greater plays of the dramatist in their literary aspect, and not merely as material for the study of philology or grammar. Criticism purely verbal and textual has only been included to such an extent as may serve to help the student in the appreciation of the essential poetry. Questions Of date and literary history have been fully dealt with in the Introductions, but the larger space has been devoted to the interpretative rather than the matter-of-fact order of scholar ship. Aesthetic judgments are never final, but the Editors have attempted to suggest points Of view from which the analysis Of dramatic motive and dramatic character may be profitably undertaken. In the Notes likewise, while it is hoped that all unfamiliar expressions and allusions have been adequately explained, yet it has been thought even more important to consider the dramatic value Of each scene, and the part which it plays in relation to the whole. These general principles are common to the whole series; in detail each Editor is alone responsible for the play intrusted to him. Every volume of the series has been provided with a Glossary, an Essay upon Metre, and an Index; and Appen dices have been added upon points of special interest, which could not conveniently be treated in the Introduction or the Notes. The text is based by the several Editors on that of the 67058 edition: the only omissions made are those that are unavoidable in an edition likely to be used by young students. Excerpt from Shakespeare's Tragedy of Coriolanus: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Families Rome 5 insomuch that the story of Coriolanus has riow come to be generally regarded as among the most beautiful of the early Roman legends. With these questions, however, Shake speare of course did not concern himself: like others of his time, he was content to take the rambling and credulous, but lively and graphic narratives of Plutarch as veritable and authentic history. And he would have been every way justi fiable in doing this, even if the later arts of historic doubting and sifting, together with the results thereof, had been at his command. For his business as an artist was to set forth a free and life-like portraiture of human character as modified by the old Roman nationality, and clothed with the drapery of the old Roman manners. Here, then, the garrulous and gossiping old story-teller of Cheronea was just the man for him since it will hardly be questioned that his tales, whether legendary or not, are replete with the spirit and life of the times and places to which they refer. Coriolanus is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1605 and 1608. The play is based on the life of the legendary Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus. The tragedy is numbered as one of the last two tragedies written by Shakespeare, along with Antony and Cleopatra. Coriolanus is the name given to a Roman general after his more than adequate military success against various uprisings challenging the government of Rome. Following this success, Coriolanus becomes active in politics and seeks political leadership. His temperament is unsuited for popular leadership and he is quickly deposed, whereupon he aligns himself to set matters straight according to his own will. The alliances he forges to accomplish his own will result in his ultimate downfall and death. The play opens in Rome shortly after the expulsion of the Tarquin kings. There are riots in progress, after stores of grain were withheld from ordinary citizens. The rioters are particularly angry at Caius Marcius, a brilliant Roman general whom they blame for the grain being taken away. The rioters encounter a patrician named Menenius Agrippa, as well as Caius Marcius himself. Menenius tries to calm the rioters, while Marcius is openly contemptuous, and says that the plebeians were not worthy of the grain because of their lack of military service. Two of the tribunes of Rome, Brutus and Sicinius, privately denounce Marcius. He leaves Rome after news arrives that a Volscian army is in the field. The commander of the Volscian army, Tullus Aufidius, has fought Marcius on several occasions and considers him a blood enemy. The Roman army is commanded by Cominius, with Marcius as his deputy. While Cominius takes his soldiers to meet Aufidius' army, Marcius leads a rally against the Volscian city of Corioli. The siege of Corioli is initially unsuccessful, but Marcius is able to force open the gates of the city, and the Romans conquer it. Excerpt from Shakespeare Select Plays: Macbeth Macbeth was printed for the first time in the folio of 1633, where it comes between Julius Casar and Hamlet, and occupies pages 131-151. It is divided throughout into acts and scenes. The text, though not so corrupt as that of some other plays - Coriolanus for example - is yet in many places very faulty, especially as regards the division of the lines. Probably it was printed from a transcript of the author's ms., which was in great part not copied from the original but written to dictation. This is confirmed by the fact that several of the most palpable blunders are blunders of the ear and not of the eye. Here, as elsewhere, we have great reason to join in the regret expressed by the editors of the first folio, that the author did not live to oversee' his own works before they were committed to the press. With regard to the time at which Macbeth was written, if we had the evidence of style alone to guide us, we should assign it to a period when Shakespeare had attained the full perfection of his powers. From the vision of the eight kings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
