Everyday the community is being stunned as reports of irregular partices compete for press headlines. The impression is that bribary and corruption, is one form or another in both extensive and increasing; although systematic statistics in this area are rare for obvious reasons. What is corruption? This list of possibilities is extensive. It starts with the outright bribary of government officials and the more ambiguous question of political contributions; then there are a whole range of activities that could be considered to some degree corrupt covering such things as the misuse of company assets for political favours, kickbacks and production money for the police, payola to disc jockeys, sympathetic features articles in return for advertising revenue, free revenue, free junkets for MP s and journalists, secret, price-fixing agreement, obtaining parts in films for reasons not wholly related to acting ability, insider dealing of various kinds, as well as improper use of the old boy network. All these forms of behaviour have one thing in common. They are attempts to influence the outcome of a decision where the nature of that influence is not made public. Essentially the practices are nothing more or less than the abuse of power. There are several reasons for this spread of corrupt practices. First the concentration of power in larger and larger units; particularly when combined with rapid growth where the channels of accountability are underdeveloped. It is also widespread in mature Societies where highly developed networks attempt to preserve the status-quo and further their vested interests.

This book focuses on and analyses the multi-layered, multi-faceted, complex and complicated corruption phenomenon that undermines inter alia democracy, government, governance, development, rule of law, and accountability; how it harms a country’s reputation, deters trade and investment; distorts markets and the performance of economies and has negative effects on the environment for the present and the future generation while detailing the profound consequences for society, especially the poor and marginalised, by violating trust, human rights and increasing inequality. Corruption and poverty have become endemic evils in Africa and there is no blueprint solution for them, given the varying situations and conditions across the continent. This book proposes a holistic, all-inclusive, and multi-thronged approach to the corruption and poverty epidemic targeting Africa. This collection of chapters will be of interest to students and academics alike.

This paper demonstrates that high and rising corruption increases income inequality and poverty by reducing economic growth, the progressivity of the tax system, the level and effectiveness of social spending, and the formation of human capital, and by perpetuating an unequal distribution of asset ownership and unequal access to education. These findings hold for countries with different growth experiences, at different stages of development, and using various indices of corruption. An important implication of these results is that policies that reduce corruption will also lower income inequality and poverty.

Economic Gangsters written by Ray Fisman and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-01-04 with Business & Economics categories.

Meet the economic gangster. He's the United Nations diplomat who double-parks his Mercedes on New York City streets at rush hour because the cops can't touch him--he has diplomatic immunity. He's the Chinese smuggler who dodges tariffs by magically transforming frozen chickens into frozen turkeys. The dictator, the warlord, the unscrupulous bureaucrat who bilks the developing world of billions in aid. The calculating crook who views stealing and murder as just another part of his business strategy. And, in the wrong set of circumstances, he might just be you. In Economic Gangsters, Raymond Fisman and Edward Miguel take readers into the secretive, chaotic, and brutal worlds inhabited by these lawless and violent thugs. Join these two sleuthing economists as they follow the foreign aid money trail into the grasping hands of corrupt governments and shady underworld characters. Spend time with ingenious black marketeers as they game the international system. Follow the steep rise and fall of stock prices of companies with unseemly connections to Indonesia's former dictator. See for yourself what rainfall has to do with witch killings in Tanzania--and more. Fisman and Miguel use economics to get inside the heads of these "gangsters," and propose solutions that can make a difference to the world's poor--including cash infusions to defuse violence in times of drought, and steering the World Bank away from aid programs most susceptible to corruption. In a new postscript, the authors look at how economists might use new tools to better understand, and fight back against, corruption and violence in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Take an entertaining walk on the dark side of global economic development with Economic Gangsters.

The Poverty Of Corrupt Nations written by Roy Cullen and has been published by Dundurn this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-05-27 with Philosophy categories.

The fight to eliminate world poverty is being severely hampered by corrupt leaders in developing countries. According to the African Union, some $150 billion is lost every year to corruption in Africa. In China, it is estimated corruption diminishes the annual value of gross domestic product by 15%. The pattern repeats itself elsewhere. This bleak situation compounds the poverty problem even more because donor countries are justifiably reluctant to support jurisdictions whose leaders are known to be corrupt, ignoring their citizens’ needs while stealing and laundering public funds for private use. What development does occur in chronically corrupt nations is often poorly planned and environmentally unsustainable, since the private gain of corrupt politicians and officials takes precedence over the implementation of sound development strategies. Likewise, bureaucratic corruption also results in the compromising of worker and consumer safety after all, a bribe costs less than obeying the law. And it is the poor who really pay the true cost of corruption. The Poverty of Corrupt Nations is a straightforward, easy-to-read exposition of the nature and scope of global corruption and money laundering, explaining the impact of recent troubling corruption trends on the public-at-large and public policy makers. Specifically, Cullen examines the links between world poverty, corruption, terrorism, global migration patterns, and money laundering. Constructively, Cullen then outlines a practical 20-point program to increase transparency and accountability in governments and parliaments around the world and break this cycle of corruption and poverty.

Rhythm of Conscience - Ambassadors of Corruption and Poverty is a book that tries to expose all the malaise and malfeasance that plague societies which impede their progress and stunt their growth because of greed, poverty mentality, corruption, love of power, selfishness etc. From its contents, the reader discovers that whereas developed countries are experiencing quantum leap in scientific and technological advancement of magical proportions due to patriotism, transparency, accountability and hard work, African countries are busy killing their economies, development opportunities and stifling their education system thus putting Africa on a backward march to dark ages. The book tries to x-ray the future of the African continent vis-a-vis their self-serving leaders and cronies who feel contented as they luxuriate in corruption, impunity and debauchery thus creating mass poverty, hunger, social decay, anger, violence, inefficiency, low productivity and unemployment. Conversely their counterparts in other climes are pushing forward to new heights, expanding beyond the frontiers of scientific and technological knowledge and making amazing breakthroughs in research in order to ensure the happiness of their citizens while African leaders specialize in looting their nations' patrimony. The book also deals with urgent and contemporary issues that are of daily concern to every man, woman and child all over the world such as HIV/AIDS. The book contains nearly one hundred poems on diverse subject matters and is divided into ten sections namely: "Corruption"; "Lamentations"; "Reflections"; "Hard Times"; "Fate In Our Hands"; "Joy And Sorrow"; "Playing Parents"; "The Pandemic HIV/AIDS"; "Love And Marriage"; "Tributes." The Author laments that law courts, long terms of imprisonment and the use of force have neither abated nor stopped corruption and thus feel that a paradigm shift is necessary to win the war against corruption. Rhythm of conscience was deliberately designed and articulated to lay the pioneering foundation for the psychological conditioning and sustained re-orientation of the minds of both the masses and their leaders so as to re-unite them with their lost consciences once again. The book therefore is a doctrinal change agent targeting the psyche of readers with the hope that it will ultimately and positively impact on the head, the heart and the mind of every reader in such a way that the evil of corruption will be tamed, reduced or completely eliminated from the reader's thought process."
