Contemporary Cosmopolitanism is the first, much-needed, introduction to contemporary political cosmopolitanism. Although it has its roots in classical philosophy and politics, Cosmopolitanism has undergone a major revival in the last forty years, stirring far-reaching and intense international debates. Cosmopolitanism is a way of thought and life which entails an identification of the individual with the whole humankind, and implies a moral obligation to promote social and political justice at the global level. Contemporary cosmopolitanism reflects a global state that is already in itself highly cosmopolitan, and represents an attempt to solve the new problems raised by this situation, to reappraise a number of traditional conceptual categories in the light of changes having already occurred or that are still taking place, to develop new ones, as well as to encourage and guide political-institutional reform projects. Taraborrelli provides clear descriptions of the three main forms of contemporary cosmopolitanism – moral, political-legal and cultural – described through the thought of various figures representative of the more significant approaches: Appiah, Archibugi, Beitz, Benhabib, Bhabha, Held, Kaldor, Nussbaum, Pogge, Sousa Santos. This book provides a sound and comprehensive basis for the study of cosmopolitanism, ideal as a starting point for the discussion of issues of widespread interest such as human rights, global justice, migration, multiculturalism.

Il cosmopolitismo e la dottrina dei diritti umani risalgono a tradizioni politiche teoriche sostanzialmente diverse, ma condividono un fondamentale tratto comune: il costante riferimento a orientamenti universalistici di valore fatti su misura per tutelare il valore dell’individuo. I diritti umani rappresentano la bussola di orientamento del cosmopolitismo, nel senso che sono giusti o giuridicamente validi su un piano etico-razionale per tutti e in generale e perciò risultano applicabili in tutto il mondo. A condizione, però, di essere rivendicati “dal basso” e di non essere fatti cadere paternalisticamente dall’alto sulla testa dei loro beneficiari. Solo un cosmopolitismo democratico, cioè, è compatibile con il pluralismo morale ed è realisticamente in grado di promuovere il diritto di tutti gli individui di scegliere la vita che essi ritengono opportuno condurre.

En los últimos años la expresión “cine transnacional” se viene utilizando como sinónimo de “cine contemporáneo” puesto que las actuales condiciones de producción, distribución y consumo cinematográficos conducen a unas transformaciones, también estéticas, que difícilmente pueden explicarse desde las culturas y políticas nacionales. La imposibilidad o, como mínimo, la dificultad de asignar una nacionalidad única o mayoritaria constituye una de las principales características del cine, y de la producción audiovisual, contemporáneos. Los textos incluidos en esta edición se ocupan de estas transformaciones a través de ejemplos relacionados con espacios geopolíticos (los países que componen Mercosur); la recepción y el consumo de producciones audiovisuales latinas en Estados Unidos o con el análisis de espacios ficcionales transnacionales: la ciudad global, la frontera y otros no lugares contemporáneos. Estos trabajos coinciden en una idea más general: el carácter transnacional del cine contemporáneo no es un asunto estrictamente cinematográfico, sino también político, pues tanto su realidad como su imaginario geopolítico afectan también al propio concepto de ciudadanía.

Il tema del cosmopolitismo è generalmente considerato un aspetto marginale o problematico del pensiero di Hannah Arendt. Da un lato perché non è mai stato affrontato da lei in modo sistematico, dall’altro perché giudicato poco compatibile sia con la sua difesa del “diritto ad avere diritti”, inteso come diritto ad appartenere a una comunità politica determinata, sia con la sua dichiarata diffidenza nei confronti dell’istituzione di un governo mondiale come soluzione al problema dell’apolidia, sia, infine, con l’importanza da lei attribuita al passaporto, significativamente definito “il libro più bello del mondo”. Il volume include invece a pieno titolo Arendt tra i teorici del cosmopolitismo, mostrando come lo precorra e lo sviluppi nelle sue tre forme principali (morale, politico-istituzionale, culturale) e come non vi sia alcuna contraddizione insuperabile tra questo e l’appartenenza a una comunità politica. Oppure tra questo e le condizioni dell’agire politico: la pluralità, il mondo in comune, l’intreccio delle relazioni umane, il confine.

Since 2007 and the economic meltdown caused by the financial crisis, our societies have been evolving in different ways. New political movements have emerged in Southern Europe and new social movements in pursuit of common concerns are playing a more active role in our daily lives. In a parallel way, after the failure to predict the financial crisis, economist and social science researchers seek fresh thinking and new models that can better explain this new reality. Regulations are of critical importance in shaping the welfare of economies and society. Thus, core legal disciplines are exploring the effects of the financial crisis on social rights, labour market regulations, and civil, common law or international law, among others.
