A Short History Of Writing Instruction written by James J. Murphy and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-05-04 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Short enough to be synoptic, yet long enough to be usefully detailed, A Short History of Writing Instruction is the ideal text for undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in rhetoric and composition. It preserves the legacy of writing instruction from antiquity to contemporary times with a unique focus on the material, educational, and institutional context of the Western rhetorical tradition. Its longitudinal approach enables students to track the recurrence over time of not only specific teaching methods, but also major issues such as social purpose, writing as power, the effect of technologies, the rise of vernaculars, and writing as a force for democratization. The collection is rich in scholarship and critical perspectives, which is made accessible through the robust list of pedagogical tools included, such as the Key Concepts listed at the beginning of each chapter, and the Glossary of Key Terms and Bibliography for Further Study provided at the end of the text. Further additions include increased attention to orthography, or the physical aspects of the writing process, new material on high school instruction, sections on writing in the electronic age, and increased coverage of women rhetoricians and writing instruction of women. A new chapter on writing instruction in Late Medieval Europe was also added to augment coverage of the Middle Ages, fill the gap in students’ knowledge of the period, and present instructional methods that can be easily reproduced in the modern classroom.

This quasi-experimental study investigated the impact of comical teaching methods on student engagement, academic achievement, and classroom affective climate in Grade 9 English Language Arts (ELA) classrooms at a private secondary school in Arizona, USA. Conducted over a 10-week intervention period from March to May 2024, the study involved 58 students across two intact classes: an experimental group (n=30) receiving comical teaching and a control group (n=28) taught conventionally. Comical teaching incorporated deliberate, relevant, and appropriate humor, such as puns, analogies, and humorous anecdotes, integrated into ELA lessons on narrative writing and literary analysis. Pre- and post-intervention assessments utilized the Student Engagement and Motivation Questionnaire (SEMQ) and the ELA Academic Achievement Test (ELA-AAT), with baseline equivalence confirmed via t-tests. Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) revealed that the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher engagement (F(1,55)=68.21, p<.001, η_p²=.55), improved academic achievement in narrative writing and literary analysis (F(1,55)=11.05, p=.002, η_p²=.17), and a more positive classroom affective climate (F(1,55)=75.98, p<.001, η_p²=.58) compared to the control group, after controlling for baseline scores. These findings suggest that strategic humor enhances cognitive and behavioral engagement, fosters a supportive classroom environment, and boosts ELA performance by reducing anxiety and increasing motivation. The study underscores the importance of training educators to use humor effectively and ethically, offering practical implications for ELA curriculum design and teacher professional development. Limitations include the use of convenience sampling and a single-school setting, suggesting the need for broader, randomized studies to enhance generalizability.
