The nine chapters in this volume of Crime Prevention Studies are organized into sections on crime analysis, evaluation, theory, and implementation. Crime analysis: Ross Homel and Jeff Clark examine the role of intoxication in violence at pubs and clubs in Queensland, and demonstrate the preventive impact of a local code of practice. A study by Zachery Fleming, and Patricia and Paul Brantingham explores the site-specific and situational characteristics of auto-theft in British Columbia, and the resulting implications for prevention. Ronald V. Clarke and Pat Mayhew assess the effect of parking patterns on car theft risk in Britain, and they offer recommendations based on their findings. Evaluation: Nancy G. La Vigne reports that installation of a high-security, computerized phone system reduced both costs and inmate violence at New York City's Rikers Island jail. Crime reduction lessons from an evaluation of walkway demolition at a London (UK) public housing estate are presented by Barry Poyner. Theory: Derek Cornish uses the concept of a 'script' to examine how events and episodes unfold in the commission of crimes, and discusses the relevance of this type of analysis to situational prevention. Rene B.P. Hesseling's review of 55 published articles suggests that displacement is not an inevitable side effect of crime prevention programs. Implementation: In light of evidence that the social and situational approaches to crime prevention are incompatible, Daniel Gilling assesses the implications for multi-agency crime prevention initiatives. Marcus Felson proposes creation of a Crime Prevention Extension Service to bring situational prevention and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design into more widespread practice.

Preventing Crime And Violence written by Brent Teasdale and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-11-29 with Social Science categories.

This insightful volume integrates criminological theories, prevention science, and empirical findings to create an up-to-date survey of crime prevention research and strategies. Its interdisciplinary perspective expands on our knowledge of risk factors to isolate the malleable mechanisms that produce criminal outcomes, and can therefore be targeted for intervention. In addition, the text identifies developmental, lifespan, and social areas for effective intervention. Reviews of family-, community-, and criminal justice-based crime prevention approaches not only detail a wide gamut of successful techniques, but also provide evidence for why they succeed. And as an extra research dimension, the book’s chapters on methodological issues and challenges uncover rich possibilities for the next generation of crime prevention studies. Included in the coverage: Integrating criminology and prevention research Social disorganization theory: its history and relevance to crime prevention Research designs in crime and violence prevention Macro- and micro-approaches to crime prevention and intervention programs Implications of life course: approaches for prevention science Promising avenues for prevention, including confronting sexual victimization on college campuses Spotlighting current progress and continuing evolution of the field, Preventing Crime and Violence will enhance the work of researchers, practitioners, academicians, and policymakers in public health, prevention science, criminology, and criminal justice, as well as students interested in criminology and criminal justice.

Innovations In Community Based Crime Prevention written by Robert J. Stokes and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-07-30 with Social Science categories.

This book explores multi-year community-based crime prevention initiatives in the United States, from their design and implementation, through 5-year follow ups. It provides an overview of programs of various sizes, affecting diverse communities from urban to rural environments, larger and smaller populations, with a range of site-specific problems. The research is based on a United States federally-funded program called the Byrne Criminal Justice Initiative (BJCI) which began in 2012, and has funded programs in 65 communities, across 28 states and 61 cities. This book serves to document the process, challenges, and lessons learned from the design and implementation of this innovative program. It covers researcher-practitioner partnerships, crime prevention planning processes, programming implementation, and issues related to sustainability of community-policing initiatives that transcend institutional barriers and leadership turnover. Through researcher partnerships at each site, it provides a rich dataset for understanding and comparing the social and economic problems that contribute to criminality, as well as the conditions where prosocial behavior and collective efficacy thrive. It also examines the future of this federally-funded program going forward in a new Presidential administration. This work will be of interest to researchers in criminology and criminal justice, particularly with an interest in translational/applied criminology and crime prevention, as well as related fields such as public policy, urban planning, and sociology.

Part II considers general approaches to preventing crime, including a new chapter on the theory and practice of deterrence. Part III focuses on specific crime prevention strategies, including a new chapter on regulation for crime prevention. Part IV focuses on the prevention of specific categories of crime and the fear they generate, including new chapters on organised crime and cybercrime.
