It all began at the turn of the century. It was the year 1900 when a young and courageous Michael Guardi left his home in San Giovanni, Naples, to come to America. Within five years, he was joined by his wife, Bella, and their three children, Alfredo, Giovanni, and Chiara. This is the story of three generations of Guardis and the effects that Michael and Bella's uprooting had on their lives. The central character, Americo--more familiarly known as Rico--is portrayed as the victim of what went wrong in his life because of the choices of others and what went wrong because of his own.

A comprehensive and practical resource for analyses of crossover designs For ethical reasons, it is vital to keep the number of patients in a clinical trial as low as possible. As evidenced by extensive research publications, crossover design can be a useful and powerful tool to reduce the number of patients needed for a parallel group design in studying treatments for non-curable chronic diseases. This book introduces commonly-used and well-established statistical tests and estimators in epidemiology that can easily be applied to hypothesis testing and estimation of the relative treatment effect for various types of data scale in crossover designs. Models with distribution-free random effects are assumed and hence most approaches considered here are semi-parametric. The book provides clinicians and biostatisticians with the exact test procedures and exact interval estimators, which are applicable even when the number of patients in a crossover trial is small. Systematic discussion on sample size determination is also included, which will be a valuable resource for researchers involved in crossover trial design. Key features: Provides exact test procedures and interval estimators, which are especially of use in small-sample cases. Presents most test procedures and interval estimators in closed-forms, enabling readers to calculate them by use of a pocket calculator or commonly-used statistical packages. Each chapter is self-contained, allowing the book to be used a reference resource. Uses real-life examples to illustrate the practical use of test procedures and estimators Provides extensive exercises to help readers appreciate the underlying theory, learn other relevant test procedures and understand how to calculate the required sample size. Crossover Designs: Testing, Estimation and Sample Size will be a useful resource for researchers from biostatistics, as well as pharmaceutical and clinical sciences. It can also be used as a textbook or reference for graduate students studying clinical experiments.

An introduction to state-of-the-art experimental design approaches to better understand and interpret repeated measurement data in cross-over designs. Repeated Measurements and Cross-Over Designs: Features the close tie between the design, analysis, and presentation of results Presents principles and rules that apply very generally to most areas of research, such as clinical trials, agricultural investigations, industrial procedures, quality control procedures, and epidemiological studies Includes many practical examples, such as PK/PD studies in the pharmaceutical industry, k-sample and one sample repeated measurement designs for psychological studies, and residual effects of different treatments in controlling conditions such as asthma, blood pressure, and diabetes. Utilizes SAS(R) software to draw necessary inferences. All SAS output and data sets are available via the book's related website. This book is ideal for a broad audience including statisticians in pre-clinical research, researchers in psychology, sociology, politics, marketing, and engineering.

"Highly recommended" by Choice While crossover books such as Rowling's Harry Potter series have enjoyed enormous sales and media attention, critical analysis of crossover fiction has not kept pace with the growing popularity of this new category of writing and reading. Falconer remedies this lack with close readings of six major British works of crossover fiction, and a wide-ranging analysis of the social and cultural implications of the global crossover phenomenon. A uniquely in-depth study of the crossover novel, Falconer engages with a ground-breaking range of sources, from primary texts, to child and adult reader responses, to cultural and critical theory.

Crossover City written by Andrew Davey and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-06-03 with Religion categories.

Is an urban based approach to mission still relevant in a networked global society? If so, what is particular about the urban context for the heart of God's mission? How is that mission understood in terms of evangelism and proclamation; sin and salvation; the work of the sacraments and the Holy Spirit; and challenge of Christ in the lives of his followers? Theological reflection, case studies and new insights come together as practitioners, theologians and urban clergy reflect on the presence of the Church in urban communities. Crossover City confronts the theological priorities of the Church as it attempts to hold the tensions between expectations of its partnership in social regeneration and welfare and its prophetic voice through its continued and transformative presence in marginalized communities. It challenges the way theology is often done in isolated factions that deny openness and collaboration which must underpin the transformative mission our urban areas cry out for. Critical reading for those in theological training and parish ministry seeking resources for a creative and radical witness in our increasingly urban world.

This monograph presents a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the developments in optimality aspects of crossover designs. Crossover designs are immensely useful in various areas of human investigation including agriculture, animal nutrition, clinical trials, pharmaceutical studies, biological assays, weather modification experiments, sensory evaluation of food products and learning experiments. Research on the optimality aspects of crossover designs has developed only in the last three decades, and it has now emerged as a potential field for further investigation. This book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. It covers optimal crossover designs at length by consolidating vast amounts of material from the literature, and includes many recent and deep results. It is expected that this book will not only provide a one-stop reference for the available results, but also encourage further research in this area of substantial practical relevance.

A reliable historical account is a recitation of past truths and an important guide to living life in the present. A study of history enables future generations to avoid the pitfalls experienced by those who have lived before. This is a historical novel based in part on a true story about a Jewish familys quest to escape oppression in Ukraine in the early twentieth century. The story traces the virulent anti-Semitism against the Jewish people in Ukraine and their need to escape from the darkness of a tsarist autocracy. In the guise of offering more freedoms to a downtrodden people, the tsarist regime was overthrown in a revolution led by the Marxist dictatorship of Lenin and then Stalin. That dictatorship became even more oppressive than the heavy hand of the tsar. The Jewish family became separated from the father when he escaped to the United States with the intent of the family joining him within months. Then the Great War closed all the doors for escape, and for almost eight years, a mother and her three young children lived through the horrors of world war, revolution, civil war, and communist dictatorship behind what became known as the Iron Curtain. The story culminates in the escape and ultimate reunion of the family with the father in the land of the free, the United States of America.
