Die wichtigsten Suchbegriffe bei der Literaturrecherche waren: "Crowdfunding", "Crowdinvesting", "Entrepreneurship" und "Gründungsfinanzierung". Die Literaturrecherche wurde in Bibliotheken, Online-Mediatheken, Google-Scholar sowie mit freier Recherchearbeit durchgeführt. Die Arbeit basiert auf Fachliteratur, Artikeln, Studien und stellenweise Onlineliteratur zur Ermittlung aktueller Marktdaten. Eine der größten Herausforderungen der Recherche bestand darin, die für die Forschungsarbeit relevante Fachliteratur auszuwählen, da trotz scheinbar großem wissenschaftlichen Interesse aktuell nur kleinere Ausschnitte des Phänomens Crowdfunding eine Brisanz für wissenschaftliche Arbeiten haben. Ein großer Überblick zur Thematik ist nach Moritz und Block 2014 noch nicht zu finden, was auf fehlende empirische Daten des Forschungsgebiets hinweist. Zur Ausarbeitung der Thematik wurde sich im Wesentlichen auf Originalliteratur und Basiswissen zur Definition der zentralen Begriffe beschränkt. Um einen aktuellen Bezug für die kritische Bestandsaufnahme zu haben, wurden überwiegend Quellen der letzten 2 bis 10 Jahre verwendet.

This book offers a comparative perspective on 18 countries’ legal regulation of crowdfunding. In the wake of the financial crises of 2008, use of this alternative financing method has increased substantially, in various forms. Whereas some states have adopted tailor-made regimes in order to regulate but also encourage this way of financing projects, allowing loans to be made by non-banking institutions, others still haven’t specifically addressed the subject. An analysis of these diverse legislative stances offers readers a range of legal solutions for managing crowdfunding activities with regard to e.g. protecting investors, imposing limits on project owners, and finally the role and duties of intermediaries, i.e., companies operating crowdfunding platforms. In addition, the content presented here provides a legal basis for states and supranational organizations interested in regulating this phenomenon to achieve more legal certainty.

Auf Basis von Fachliteratur werden zunächst mögliche Erfolgsfaktoren identifiziert und die Chancen und Risiken der Nutzung der neuen Fundraising-Methode für NGOs und Privatpersonen abgewogen. Eine eigene Analyse der bisher erfolgreichen sozialen Crowdfunding-Projekte sowie eine Online-Umfrage untermauern bzw. hinterfragen bisherige Annahmen. Aus deren Auswertung geht hervor, dass Crowdfunding besonders für NGOs, deren Spendeneinnahmen seit Jahren stagnieren, ein neuer Fundraising-Kanal werden kann. Die kurz- bis mittelfristigen Erfolgspotenziale von Crowdfunding zur Finanzierung sozialer Projekte sind also ausgesprochen groß. Aus den Analysen lassen sich Rückschlüsse über den zukünftigen Erfolg von Crowdfunding für soziale Projekte ziehen und Handlungsempfehlungen ableiten.
