Measuring surface heat flow at the Hikurangi Trough is key toward characterizing the local thermal regime and the influence of thermally sensitive processes such as fluid flow and slow slip. Marine heat flow data were collected during May– June 2015 in the northern Hikurangi Trough at sites seaward and landward of the deformation front, giving mean and one standard deviation values of 58 ± 16 and 46 ± 15 mW m−2 respectively. A 3.5 m violin-bow style probe was used to measure thermal conductivity and temperature gradient of the seafloor, and heat flow is calculated using Fourier’s law. Two-dimensional steady-state, finite element modeling was undertaken to analyze the influence of subduction parameters on surface heat flow and temperature along the subduction thrust. Heat flow values seaward of the deformation front have been found to be sensitive to the structure of buried and outcropping extrusive crust, but the mean heat flow is within the range of expected values for lithosphere this age (120 Myr) according to the GDH1 cooling model. Landward of the deformation front, measured heat flow is in excess of preferred modeled values. I interpret these observations as evidence for fluid flow within a crustal aquifer system and through splay faults within the forearc. A heat flow discontinuity of 40 mW m−2 landward of the deformation front supports the presence of compaction sourced fluid along the subduction thrust, which is consistent with previous evidence for excess pore pressure and the occurrence of shallow slow slip.

In steep terrain the effect of advective flow can be significant, as it can distort the temperature field in the upper brittle crust. The effect was studied by modeling advective flow across a large valley system in Tibet which is associated with several geothermal hot spring systems, the Yanbajing Valley. It was found that, in this setting, all near-surface temperature gradients are significantly disturbed, attaining values differing by up to half an order of magnitude from those resulting from conductive heat transfer. Allowing for advective effects, it was found that the crustal heat flux within the Himalayan Geothermal Belt lies within the range of 60 to 90 mW/m2 in the Lhasa-Yanbajing area.

The outflow of heat from the earth's interior, the terrestrial heat flow, and the temperature field at depth are determined by deep-seated tectonic processes. The knowledge of the re gional heat flow pattern is thus very important in geophysics and provides a useful tool for studying crustal and litho spheric structure and understanding the nature of their evo lution. In order to use the results of heat flow measurements for regional studies and/or to correlate the observed surface geothermal activity with other geophysical or geological fea tures, a map showing the surface distribution of heat flow is necessary. Since 1963, when the first comprehensive listing of all available heat flow data appeared (Lee, 1963), several at tempts have been made to up-date the list, to classify all the data and to interpret them with respect to tectonics, deep structure and to use them for constructing surface heat flow maps. The first listing was subsequently revised by Lee and Uyeda (1965); numerous new data which were published there after were included in successive catalogs compiled by Simmons and Horai (1968) and then again by Jessop et al. (1976). The map showing the surface heat flow pattern may also be of great value for practical purposes, in view of the recent world-wide search for applicable sources of geothermal energy.
