The temperature (4.5-700 K) and magnetic field (0-50 kOe) dependencies of the dc magnetization, and ac magnetic susceptibility in 5 Oe, 125 Hz ac field of polycrystalline Tb(Mn[Subscript l-x]Fe[Subscript x])2 alloys with x = 0.35, 0.5, and 0.65 have been measured. The substitution of Fe for Mn introduces a negative chemical pressure in the cubic C-15 crystal structure, decreasing the lattice parameters and the distance between Mn atoms below the critical value of 2.66 Å. At 5 K, all studied Tb(Mn[Subscript l-x]Fe[Subscript x])2 alloys exhibit ferrimagnetism which is created by the antiparallel alignment of the magnetic moments of Tb and Fe atoms. The Curie temperature, the remanence and coercivity increase with x increasing. For all alloys a change of the slope of the plot of the inverse dc magnetic susceptibility vs. temperature was observed, and the corresponding temperature increases with increasing x, i.e. with decreasing lattice parameters. The temperature dependence of the ac magnetic susceptibility of all of the Tb(Mn[Subscript l-x]Fe[Subscript x])2 alloys exhibits a peak at Curie temperature which is typically observed for ferromagnetic materials with non-zero coercivity and remanence. For polycrystal samples, the diagonal optical conductivity ([Sigma subscript lxx]) has been measured using ellipsometry at zero magnetic field. The magneto-optical Kerr rotation angle and ellipticity have been measured by Kerr spectrometry at room temperature and a magnetic field of 5 kOe, the results show that Tb(Mn05̣Fe05̣)2 and Tb(Mn03̣5Fe06̣5)2 have larger Kerr rotational angle than TbFe2 at room temperature. The magneto-optical measurements verified the conclusion that spin-orbit interaction and exchange splitting of the electronic structure are the dominant factors which determine the magneto-optical properties of the R-TM system.

In this thesis, we discuss the motivation for integrated magneto-optical isolators and explain why the orthoferrite is such an attractive materials class for this purpose. We then derive from first physical principles the dependence of Faraday rotation, absorption, and certain figures of merit on the material's dielectric tensor elements. Next, we use pulsed laser deposition to grow thin films of BiFeO3 on MgO (001) and SrTiO3 (001) substrates. After optimizing growth conditions to obtain high quality films, we characterize the films' crystal structure with two-dimensional x-ray diffraction. We then examine the magnetic, optical, and magneto-optical properties of these films. We find that the highly textured films grown on SrTiO3 are monoclinic with an out-of-plane c-axis aligned with the (001) direction of the substrate and approximate pseudocubic lattice parameters of a = b = 4.04 A, c = 3.95 A, and 90° - [beta] = -0.88°. These films are weakly magnetic, with a magnetization of 1.2 emu/cm3 at an applied field of 10 kOe; highly absorptive, with an average absorption coefficient of 910 cm-1; and possess a low specific Faraday rotation of 320/cm at 1.8 kOe of applied field. As expected, we find that the magneto-optical figure of merit is negligible for this material due to its high absorption, which we attribute to a thin surface layer of phase separated bismuth and iron oxides caused by bismuth segregation during growth. We offer additional explanations for these values and show the first results of newer, more promising work with mixed cation perovskite.

Complex oxide thin films offer unique functionalities which can potentially extend the utility of current storage, processing and optical isolator technologies. In this thesis, we present three categories of studies on complex oxide growth using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and structural, magnetic, magneto-optical and ferroelectric characterization. We first focused on enhancing integrated magneto-optical isolator performance by improving the growth method of magneto-optical Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG) films. The spectral and substrate orientation dependence of the magneto-optical figure of merit of epitaxial Ce: YIG on GGG substrates show very high magneto-optical figure of merit (379-400° dB-1 at [lambda] = 1550 nm for all substrate orientations). The thermal budgets of Ce: YIG growth on ShN4 (2 high temperature PLD steps and a rapid thermal anneal, RTA), silicon-on-insulator substrates (a high and a low temperature PLD step and a RTA) and optical resonator chips (one PLD step, one RTA, YIG seed layer from the top) were progressively reduced to achieve improved integrated optical isolators with low insertion loss of 7.4 ± 1.8 dB and an isolation ratio of 13.0 ± 2.2 dB. We demonstrated that the ferrimagnetic insulator YIG thin films (Y3Fe5O12) epitaxially grown on GGG substrates achieve ultralow Gilbert damping of spin waves ([alpha] = 2.2-7 x 10-4 ), which enable em-long in-plane propagation of spin waves. This demonstration enables researchers to fabricate near-dissipationless magnon-based logic computers. Finally, we present a substitutionally-doped perovksite, STCo30 (Sr Ti0.70 CO0.30 O3-[delta]) integrated on Si, STO (100), and on Nb:STO substrates. This perovskite oxide has been found to exhibit ferroelectricity and magnetism at room temperature. Experimental results on magnetism, ferroelectricity and structure were reproduced using density functional theory simulations.
