Blanco examines the relationship between life-writing in Martín Gaite's notebooks and her fictional work. Carmen Martín Gaite (1925-2000) was one of the most important Spanish writers of the second half of the twentieth century. From the 1940s, until her death in 2000, she published short stories, novels, poetry, drama, children literature and cultural and historical studies. This book studies life writing in Martín Gaite's notebooks Cuadernos de todo (2002) and her novels of the 1990s, Nubosidad variable (1992), La Reina de las nieves (1994), Lo raro es vivir (1996) and Irse de casa (1998). It looks at the use of first person narration in Martín Gaite's work, drawing a parallel between the notebooks and her fictional work. It further analyses the waythe author's notebooks relate to the development of her later novels as well as the use of writing as therapy. This work offers a way of looking at Carmen Martín Gaite's work from a personal and intimate perspective. Maria-José Blanco López de Lerma is Spanish Lecturer and Language Tutor at the Department of Spanish, Portuguese & Latin-American Studies, King's College London.

At Macedonio Fernández's funeral in 1952, Jorge Luis Borges delivered the following elegy: “In those years I imitated him to the point of transcription, to the point of devout and passionate plagiarism. I felt: Macedonio is metaphysics, Macedonio is literature.” This is the first book available in English that collects essays by the world's leading scholars on Macedonio Fernández, one of Borges's most important mentors and a still enigmatic thinker of the early 20th century. Macedonio's philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, and experimental writing laid the foundations for Borges's own theoretical and literary matrix. Nonetheless, Borges helped shape a myth of Macedonio as a thinker who could not translate his oratorial geniality into written intelligibility. So, despite the centrality of Macedonio to Borges's thought, his work has remained almost unknown to English-speaking readers. Contributors to this volume demonstrate, however, that this myth reduces the complexities of Macedonio's life and creative process, as each chapter shines new light on his texts. Juan Antonio González Iglesias, Fernando Aínsa Amigues, José Luis Gómez Toré, Álvaro García, Gabriel Saad y Aurelio Major iluminaron desde distintos frentes y perspectivas teóricas, que abarcaron la poesía, la prosa, el ejercicio de la traducción o la dimensión crítica, la sólida e incontestable trayectoria de Vitale. El presente volumen tiene como objetivo primero regalar a nuestra poeta con algunas de las palabras que su obra inspira y nutre. Un segundo propósito de esta publicación que acoge la colección Biblioteca de América de Ediciones Universidad de Salamanca por vez primera desde que se concede el Premio Reina Sofía de Poesía Iberoamericana consiste en contribuir a incrementar la nómina de trabajos críticos sobre la obra de una de las autoras insoslayables de la poesía hispanoamericana de los siglos xx y xxi.
