This book addresses the complications and implications of parental involvement as a policy, through an exploratory theoretical approach, including historical and sociological accounts and personal reflection. This approach represents the author's effort to understand the origins, meanings, and effects of parental involvement as a prerequisite of schooling and particularly as a policy 'solution' for low achievement and even inequity in the American educational system. Most of the policy and research discourse on school-family relations exalts the partnership ideal, taking for granted its desirability and viability, the perspective of parents on specific involvement in instruction, and the conditions of diverse families in fulfilling their appointed role in the partnership. De Carvalho takes a distinct stance. She argues that the partnership-parental ideal neglects several major factors: It proclaims parental involvement as a means to enhance (and perhaps equalize) school outcomes, but disregards how family material and cultural conditions, and feelings about schooling, differ according to social class; thus, the partnership-parental involvement ideal is more likely to be a projection of the model of upper-middle class, suburban community schooling than an open invitation for diverse families to recreate schooling. Although it appeals to the image of the traditional community school, the pressure for more family educational accountability really overlooks history as well as present social conditions. Finally, family-school relations are relations of power, but most families are powerless. De Carvalho makes the case that two linked effects of this policy are the gravest: the imposition of a particular parenting style and intrusion into family life, and the escalation of educational inequality. Rethinking Family-School Relations: A Critique of Parental Involvement in Schooling--a carefully researched and persuasively argued work--is essential reading for all school professionals, parents, and individuals concerned with public schooling and educational equality.

This study explored how a multicultural/multilingual school negotiated culture with limited English proficient (LEP) students' families, particularly in the context of parent involvement activities. In order to understand how such negotiation of culture occurred, the researcher focused on the perspectives that school administrators, teachers and parents of students in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program had on the education of LEP students and their parents' involvement in school-organized activities. It also focused on the participants' understandings of cultural capital and the extent to which the school builds on immigrant/sojourner families' knowledge and culture to support their children's education. While results show that teachers and parents had similar views of LEP student education and parent involvement, school personnel and immigrant/sojourner parents held different perspectives and expectations. Moreover, the results revealed that cultural capital, social class, and parents' educational attainment level influence the way parents understand the academic and social expectations of the school's dominant culture and their interactions with school personnel. Likewise, cultural biases influence school administrators and teachers' perceptions and interactions with parents from ethnic/linguistic minority groups.

This book examines whether or not and how personal religion associates with school cultural capital. Specifically, on one level, the book offers insights and empirical data on who is choosing, teaching, and working in parochial schools and what motivates them to do so in the schools, issues that still remain largely unexplored in the educational research literature. In particular, it centers on the significance of personal religion and commitment as a reason for choosing and serving in parochial schools. On another level, the book is an attempt to enhance our understanding of the leadership orientation, school satisfaction, teacher assertiveness and empowerment, educational aspiration, and parental involvement in parochial schools, attributes reportedly essential for successful schools. Most importantly, at the heart of the book is an endeavor to estimate the influence of personal religion on the development of these cultural capital attributes and to address its implications for parochial schools as well as the current discussion on public schooling versus parochial schooling in the United States. To achieve these goals, the author will rely on first-hand empirical data collected for this book or other related research projects and adopt various scientific methods for data analysis and interpretation. The book shows that personal religion matters, but its impact is weaker than thought and is largely restricted to the students and parents in parochial schools, rather than their educators. To the extent that parochial schools excel more than public schools, personal religion seems to be responsible for the development of student and parent-level cultural capital such as parenting style and student desire for academic success and favorable attitude toward school, yet it does not necessarily engender the growth of teacher and administrator cultural capital. This result, to some extent, comes as a surprise but corrects and enhances our understanding about whether or not and how religion affects academic achievement.
