The Culture of Reading and the Teaching of English' aims to do for contemporary literary and cultural theory what I.A. Richard's 'Practical Criticism' did for literary formalism. Kathleen McCormick analyzes current approaches to reading theory and the teaching of literary and related cultural texts. She moves beyond 'theory', with its tendency to become arcane and elitest, and instead examines the 'cultures' of reading - its ideologies, institutions and classroom practices. She presents cognitive, expressivist and culturally-based approaches to reading, and then considers a variety of institutional and classroom practices from the writing of formal essays to the use of textbooks. This represents a crucial intervention in debates around the reformation of new curricula in schools and the 'politically correct' classroom currently raging in both Britain and America. 'The Culture of Reading' is much more than a classroom-oriented approach to contemporary literary and cultural theory. Through accounts of teaching experiences, student writing, professional conferences and curriculum battles on both sides of the Atlantic, she tells an often personal, frequently amusing account of the discoveries of one teacher - herself a widely published critic, writer and lecturer - as she finds how theory is mediated in very different institutions, social contexts and classroom situations.

This volume is the logical outgrowth of the previous book "Islamic Arabic culture in English Language Textbooks", which explored the criteria of Islamic Arabic culture that should be involved in the English Language Textbooks prescribed for Muslim Arab students. This second volume tries to present an answer to the following bewildering question, "Do we really need to teach language with its own culture?" The intimate relationship between language and culture is strikingly illustrated by many studies, which confirm the view that language and culture cannot be separated.I always asked myself,"Should the students' local culture be neglected?" I decided on my goal and determined to find out the truth through designing an Islamic-Arabic-culture-based course and teaching it to a sample of Muslim Arab students at Al-Azhar institutes in Egypt. With so much energy directed at further investigation, it was obvious that any such development would be valuable and that different trends and tendencies were bound to develop.Based on the results of the study, it was clearly shown that the proposed Islamic-Arabic-culture-based course was very effective in developing EFL listening and reading skills.

The aim of this study is to reveal prospective English language teachers' perceptions of a culture-oriented syllabus implemented in a foreign language context. The syllabus included drama-oriented activities, improvised writing, and a cross-cultural study focusing on teaching some pre-selected cultural elements. A total of 67 students enrolled in an English Language Teaching department at a state university participated in this study and the data was collected qualitatively. The research paradigm was used to investigate the contribution of culture-based syllabi to the development of linguistic and cultural knowledge of prospective English teachers. The study aimed to figure out the efficacy of the suggested culture-oriented syllabus. Thus the participants were requested to put forth their views stressing the three instructional activities that were specifically designed for the course. The research findings indicated that eighty-five percent of the participants were introduced to new cultural elements through the activities in which they were engaged. With regard to activities implemented in the course, it was also found that the participants were satisfied to a great extent with the syllabus, and as prospective teachers of English, they stated that they would like to implement some of them in their future career.

This book analyses an intercultural project undertaken by French and English 14-year-olds based on an exchange of materials created by the pupils and focused on the topic of law and order. The project was based on a view of learning as a dialogic process interacting with others. A first language and home culture is acquired through such interaction. This project sought to realise this dialogic process in a more meaningful way than is often the case in foreign language classrooms.

This state-of-the-art exploration of language, culture, and identity is orchestrated through prominent scholars’ and teachers’ narratives, each weaving together three elements: a personal account based on one or more memorable or critical incidents that occurred in the course of learning or using a second or foreign language; an interpretation of the incidents highlighting their impact in terms of culture, identity, and language; the connections between the experiences and observations of the author and existing literature on language, culture and identity. What makes this book stand out is the way in which authors meld traditional ‘academic’ approaches to inquiry with their own personalized voices. This opens a window on different ways of viewing and doing research in Applied Linguistics and TESOL. What gives the book its power is the compelling nature of the narratives themselves. Telling stories is a fundamental way of representing and making sense of the human condition. These stories unpack, in an accessible but rigorous fashion, complex socio-cultural constructs of culture, identity, the self and other, and reflexivity, and offer a way into these constructs for teachers, teachers in preparation and neophyte researchers. Contributors from around the world give the book broad and international appeal.

This book investigates the impact of culture-based learning among secondary school children in India. The bias of cultural values can determine a student's learning preference. This study reflects that students have the potential to adapt and develop their learning styles according to society, family, religion, and cultural demands. While traditional values are against certain types of students, there is still hope for strategic change by stimulating educators to transform the way students should be allowed to learn.

Performed Culture in Chinese Language Education: A Culture-Based Approach for U.S. Collegiate Contexts elaborates on a cultural awareness-oriented, cultural performance-based, and cross-cultural communication-focused foreign language pedagogical paradigm—Performed Culture Approach — in the context of U.S. collegiate Chinese language education. Guangyan Chen draws on the data collected through questionnaires, comparisons between this pedagogy and mainstream pedagogical frameworks, and analyses of curricular development, lesson plans, and classroom discourses. Chen promotes the performed culture approach by delineating the theoretical framework of this pedagogy, reporting studies that empirically support cultural primacy in Chinese language education, and illustrating this pedagogy through analyses of a curricular structure, a lesson plan, and classroom discourses. Chen shows how this pedagogy addresses the gaps between the social need for global citizens and the insufficient integration of culture into foreign language education. The performed culture approach also addresses the overall drop in U.S. collegiate foreign language enrollment as this pedagogy connects foreign language programs to university missions and social needs.
