Critical mathematics education brings together a series of concerns related to mathematics and its role in society, the practices of teaching and learning of mathematics in educational settings, and the practices of researching mathematics education. The work of Ole Skovsmose has provided a seminal contribution to the shaping of those concerns in the international community of mathematics educators and mathematics education researchers. This book gathers contributions of researchers from five continents, for whom critical mathematics education has been an inspiration to think about many different topics such as the dialogical and political dimensions of teacher education, mathematical modeling, the philosophy of mathematics from social and political perspectives, teaching practices in classrooms, the connection between mathematics and society, the scope and limits of critical thinking in relation to mathematics and mathematics education, and the political dimension of researching mathematics education. The book is not only a tribute to Ole Skovsmose’s long academic career; it is also a way of providing an overview of the roots of the critical mathematics education concerns, their current developments in different parts of the world, and their future directions. With a diversity of styles and forms of texts, this book is addressed to all those teachers and researchers who would like to be introduced or would like to go deeper into the types of insights that critical mathematics education offers.

This report is the result of a fast-track study of U.S. mathematical sciences research institutes done in response to a request from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The task of the Committee on U.S. Mathematical Sciences Research Institutes was to address the following three questions: 1. What are the characteristic features of effective mathematical sciences research institutes in the ways that they further mathematical research in the United States, and are there ways that the current configuration can be improved? 2. What kinds of institutes should there be in the United States, and how many does the nation need? 3. How should U.S. mathematical sciences research institutes be configured (with regard to, for example, diversity of operating formats, distribution of mathematical fields, and interinstitute cooperation or coordination) in order to have the nation's mathematical research enterprise continue to be most productive and successful?

Transforming Undergraduate Education In Science Mathematics Engineering And Technology written by National Research Council and has been published by National Academies Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999-03-25 with Education categories.

Today's undergraduate studentsâ€"future leaders, policymakers, teachers, and citizens, as well as scientists and engineersâ€"will need to make important decisions based on their understanding of scientific and technological concepts. However, many undergraduates in the United States do not study science, mathematics, engineering, or technology (SME&T) for more than one year, if at all. Additionally, many of the SME&T courses that students take are focused on one discipline and often do not give students an understanding about how disciplines are interconnected or relevant to students' lives and society. To address these issues, the National Research Council convened a series of symposia and forums of representatives from SME&T educational and industrial communities. Those discussions contributed to this book, which provides six vision statements and recommendations for how to improve SME&T education for all undergraduates. The book addresses pre-college preparation for students in SME&T and the joint roles and responsibilities of faculty and administrators in arts and sciences and in schools of education to better educate teachers of K-12 mathematics, science, and technology. It suggests how colleges can improve and evaluate lower-division undergraduate courses for all students, strengthen institutional infrastructures to encourage quality teaching, and better prepare graduate students who will become future SME&T faculty.

For well over a half century, American Universities and Colleges has been the most comprehensive and highly respected directory of four-year institutions of higher education in the United States. A two-volume set that Choice magazine hailed as a most important resource in its November 2006 issue, this revised edition features the most up-to-date statistical data available to guide students in making a smart yet practical decision in choosing the university or college of their dreams. In addition, the set serves as an indispensable reference source for parents, college advisors, educators, and public, academic, and high school librarians. These two volumes provide extensive information on 1,900 institutions of higher education, including all accredited colleges and universities that offer at least the baccalaureate degree. This essential resource offers pertinent, statistical data on such topics as tuition, room and board; admission requirements; financial aid; enrollments; student life; library holdings; accelerated and study abroad programs; departments and teaching staff; buildings and grounds; and degrees conferred. Volume two of the set provides four indexes, including an institutional Index, a subject accreditation index, a levels of degrees offered index, and a tabular index of summary data by state. These helpful indexes allow readers to find information easily and to make comparisons among institutions effectively. Also contained within the text are charts and tables that provide easy access to comparative data on relevant topics.
