Contemporary International Law Issues: Sharing Pan-European and American Perspectives is the record of the First Joint Conference of The American Society of International Law and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Internationaal Recht, which was held in The Hague, The Netherlands on July 4-6, 1991. At this event international scholars, practitioners and experts gathered to discuss the latest developments in such areas as trade and investment, the environment, human rights, settlement of disputes and commercial arbitration, with particular reference to the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, and the European Community. The conference focused especially on Pan-European perspectives on current international legal issues. The content of these Proceedings is evidence of the wide range of dialogue that occurred during the Joint Conference. The book provides a record of this dialogue and directs the reader to issues which might form suitable subjects for further research and elaboration in other scholarly work. The book will be of interest to academics and diplomats, as well as legal practitioners.

In the spirit of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations and the United Nations Decade of International Law, the contributors to "Perspectives on International Law" honour with this legal treatise a devoted friend of the United Nations and international law, Judge Manfred Lachs - a noted judge, diplomat, humanist and, above all, teacher. The work includes a variety of perspectives on international law relating to what were Judge Lachs' four main areas of interest: the theory and practice of international law, the United Nations, the World Court, and space law. The book meets the need for a reference work covering selected subject areas and providing different perspectives on some of the key issues of current concern. Many eminent experts in various fields related to international law, including Judges of the International Court of Justice, diplomats, and professors of law - most of whom knew Judge Lachs personally - have contributed. Each chapter has been prepared specifically for the book. The contributors represent all political, legal and cultural regions of the world and provide a range of backgrounds and viewpoints, offering a variety of new ideas for strengthening international law, based on their assessment of the lessons of the past.

Since 1985, the Law School at the University of Hull has hosted an annual lecture - the Josephine Onoh Memorial Lecture - given by a distinguished international lawyer. These annual lectures are funded by the Josephine Onoh Memorial Fund, established in 1984 by the family and friends of Josephine Onoh who was tragically killed in an air crash at Enugu, Nigeria, in November 1983. Josephine was a Hull law graduate, and at the time of her death was registered at the University for a research degree in the field of international law. This book contains a collection of these annual lectures. The first lecture in 1985 was given by the late Judge Taslim Elias, at that time President of the International Court of Justice. Subsequent lectures have been given by both leading practitioners and professors of international law, including Sir Robert Jennings, Bin Cheng, Sir Ian Sinclair, Philip Allott, Henry Schermers, Lord Mackenzie-Stuart, Alexandre-Charles Kiss, Dame Rosalyn Higgins, Peter Sand, Ian Brownlie, Christopher Greenwood, Marti Koskenniemi, and Ralph Zacklin. The lectures reflect some of the most significant international concerns of the last two decades. The subjects they address include new trends in international law, international courts and politics, the practitioner's view of international law, international law and revolution, the European Convention of Human Rights, European Community law concepts, the global environment and international law, the current role of the United Nations, international environmental trust funds, international boundary law, international law and imperialism, and humanitarian intervention. This important collection of essays by some of the leading international law figures of our generation will be of equal value to all interested in international law, whether the academic or the practitioner.

Challenges Of International Law In The Asian Region written by Vitit Muntarbhorn and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-06-14 with Law categories.

This book provides an innovative outlook of the various challenges of international law in the Asian region. Moving away from the Eurocentrism prevalent in the literature on the subject, it provides a comprehensive Asian perspective without adopting a monolithic or homogeneous Asian approach. Although Asian countries converge on certain issues related to international law, such as engagement with the United Nations, at times, there is a significant divergence, such as in the case of agricultural trade liberalisation. Given the vastness of the region and the differing political systems, there are many discrepancies to consider. The book takes into account the viewpoint of civil society so as to avoid a vertical state‐centred approach. Offering an easy-to-understand presentation of key issues concerning the region, this book is a useful introduction to this complex topic for students, academics and practitioners of international law.

Progress In International Law written by Miller and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-06-25 with Law categories.

Progress in International Law is a comprehensive accounting of international law for our times. Forty leading international law theorists analyze the most significant current issues in international law and their critical assessments draw diverse conclusions about the current state and future prospects of international law. The material is grouped under the headings: The History and Theory of International Law; The Sources of International Law and Their Application in the United States; International Actors; International Jurisdiction and International Jurisprudence; The Use of Force and the World's Peace; and The Challenge of Protecting the Environment and Human Rights. The book draws its inspiration from a similar survey undertaken in 1932 by Harvard Law Professor and PCIJ Judge Manley O. Hudson. In his book Progress in International Organization, Hudson sought to demonstrate that what he perceived as an emerging international infrastructure, and as moves toward the rule of law in international affairs, were sure signs of human progress towards peace and cooperation. Progress in International Law critically engages with that claim as a normative matter and, at the same time, presents the evidence by which a judgment about our own progress towards peace and cooperation might be judged.
