Through the work of the Schools Council and other national agencies, the difficulties of achieving effective curriculum change through centralized initiatives and directives have been well documented. At the same time the importance of teacher involvement in such activities, and the advantages of curriculum development over revolutionary innovation, have become plain. This knowledge and the understandings it has generated are important today, when unusually sweeping changes are being brought about in the school curriculum. The authors of this book draw together these ideas to assist people promoting curriculum changes, as well as those on the receiving end of such projects.

Of all the subjects in the school curriculum, science has been a most common target of the reformer’s zeal. As a consequence, school science has featured frequently in studies of change in evaluation exercises and has also attracted the interest of social scientists. There have been others who have studied the effects of innovation in this field not as evaluators, nor as scientists, but as students of curricular problems. Such work is represented in this book, originally published in 1982. It is particularly concerned with the way in which teachers use innovation and how this can assist policy making in the curriculum field. By focusing on the science curriculum the contributors examine in detail the way in which teachers cope with daily problems and with the demands that new ideas make on the systems to which they are accustomed. The relationship between the school and the community is also dealt with in these case studies, all of which have implications for policy and research in the curriculum field.

Originally published in 1974. This book presents research into the planning and implementation of the Keele Integrated Studies Project. From 1969 to 1972 the work of the project team was investigated through observation, questionnaire and interview to obtain a picture of the way decisions about curriculum innovation are made and of how these decisions are executed in schools. The book is mainly the outsider's view, but the Project Director and the Assistant Director have contributed chapters and comments by members of the project team are also included. Three aspects of the curriculum project are covered: the interaction between project team, trial schools, university, local authority and Schools Council; the relations within the project team, within the trial schools, and between the curriculum innovators and the classroom teachers; and the impact of the project after the finish of the trial in the schools. The final chapters include conclusions on the process of curriculum change and on the education system in which it occurs. The problems of reconciling the different perspectives and interests of all the parties involved are examined in detail, showing that negotiation, adaptation and compromise are at the heart of curriculum change.

Originally published in 1979. This book is a study of the problems of functional and ideological adaptation of the curriculum in response to social change, based on a close investigation of a particular significant curriculum innovation, set up in 1962: the Nuffield Foundation Science Teaching Project. The book focuses particularly on the development of the O-level chemistry curriculum, which was one of the three founding projects. If sensible decisions are to be made about curriculum development, now and in the future, it is vitally important that we take account of the history of influential curriculum projects. This book deals thoroughly with the various political, social and educational factors influencing the setting up of the Nuffield Foundation Science Teaching Project, the details of its execution (methods, the influence of pressure groups, and of particular individuals) and its outcomes. The content of the secondary curriculum is a perennial topic of interest and this book is a stimulating aid to clear thinking not only as history.

Using cutting-edge and frontline research relating to present day problems in educational systems, this volume provides a critical discussion about political alternatives in education to neoliberalism. Based on Engeström’s Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), a theory that has potential for new areas of educational research, this book explores a conceptual framework of curriculum innovation in school practice that focuses on processes of mutual meaning-making as boundary crossing between partners from different communities. Focusing on active professionalization and continuing professional learning of teachers as subjects, agents, extended professionals and curriculum makers in school-based deliberative partnerships with one another and with other educational partners inside and outside school, this volume is divided into eight accessible chapters and covers topics such as political and curricular considerations about educational change, deliberative partnership as a new way for reform, prospects for an innovative curriculum process and putting into action deliberative partnership-based curricular innovation. This volume is the perfect addition for teachers, teacher educators, researchers and practitioners who are looking to explore beyond the viewpoint that teachers operate in singular communities and the potential and possibility of an alternative framework for teacher learning in the future.
