A comprehensive review of what is known about the role of cytokines and chemokines in a variety of human infectious diseases, including gram-negative and -positive infections, listeriosis, mycobacterial infections, lyme arthritis, pneumonia, fungal infections, HIV, leishmaniasis, and sepsis. The authors demonstrate the different cytokine and chemokine production profiles in response to a wide variety of pathogens and the importance of host genetic factors in determining the type and magnitude of responses to a given microorganism. They also critically evaluate the use of cytokines and anticytokines in the treatment of infectious diseases and show how knowledge of cytokine pleiotropic effects, redundancy, and the complexity of the cytokine network has led to better design and better outcomes in cytokine-based therapies for specific infections.

t Heinz Red! and Gunther Sch!ag Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Experimental and Clinical Traumatology, Vienna, Austria The word "sepsis" derives from the Greek meaning decay or rottenness. Tradition ally this term has been used to describe the process of infection accompanied by the host's systemic inflammatory response. Based on that understanding, previous clin ical studies have been designed to include only patients with positive blood cultures [1, 2]. However, the frequent occurrence of a septic response without the demon stration of microorganisms in the circulation has led to a new definition and under standing of sepsis, mainly as the systemic response of the host to an often unde tectable microbiological or non-microbiological process [3]. The general consensus is that cytokines are central to the inflammatory response, particularly in sepsis. It is now known that not only Gram-negative but also Gram positive, viral, and fungal infections initiate the complex cascades of cytokine release. Probably the most important aspect of bacterial action is the release of toxic bacterial products. In particular endotoxin from Gram-negative bacteria (see chap ter by Schade) and super antigens (see chapter by Neumann and Holzmann), as well as pore-forming toxins [4] from Gram-positive bacteria, induce cytokine formation. The importance of this cytokine release is evident from both diagnostic and thera peutic (mostly experimental) studies, and the action of cytokines may be the key to our understanding of the pathophysiology of the sepsis syndrome.

Focusing on the role of the cytokine network in promoting immunity, this superb interdisciplinary collection intensively investigates the behavior of inflammatory mediators in the pathogenesis and resolution of pathogen-specific pulmonary infections-highlighting recent basic findings and discussing the latest results of clinical trials. Defines the vital role that cytokines play in host defense and the pathophysiology of infections associated with pulmonary disease, emphasizing the potential of immunomodulators and gene therapy in treatment. Cytokines in Pulmonary Disease provides state-of-the-art knowledge of the field of cytokines and pulmonary diseases in a single, authoritative source reviews the roles of cytokines in pathogen-specific infections, including tuberculosis, HIV-related infections, fungal pneumonias, cystic fibrosis, and other disorders assesses the rationale and efficacy of new approaches in both the prevention and treatment of pulmonary infectious disease examines the clinical applications and impact of cytokines in pulmonary disease and more. Written by leading international authorities in their respective fields, Cytokines in Pulmonary Disease will find a place on the bookshelves of specialists in pulmonary and critical care medicine, infectious diseases, surgery, immunology, microbiology, cell and molecular biology, and medical school and graduate students in these disciplines.

Sids Sudden Infant And Early Childhood Death written by Roger W. Byard and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-04 with Medical categories.

This volume covers aspects of sudden infant and early childhood death, ranging from issues with parental grief, to the most recent theories of brainstem neurotransmitters. It also deals with the changes that have occurred over time with the definitions of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), SUDI (sudden unexpected death in infancy) and SUDIC (sudden unexpected death in childhood). The text will be indispensable for SIDS researchers, SIDS organisations, paediatric pathologists, forensic pathologists, paediatricians and families, in addition to residents in training programs that involve paediatrics. It will also be of use to other physicians, lawyers and law enforcement officials who deal with these cases, and should be a useful addition to all medical examiner/forensic, paediatric and pathology departments, hospital and university libraries on a global scale. Given the marked changes that have occurred in the epidemiology and understanding of SIDS and sudden death in the very young over the past decade, a text such as this is very timely and is also urgently needed.

Presenting a wealth of new data on the interaction among T-cell subsets and cytokines, this book offers a fresh perspective on infectious diseases. It provides useful insights into the nature and treatment of helminthic and mycobacterial infections, with special emphasis on leprosy, leishmaniasis, malaria and trypanosomiasis. The outcome of the host response to infectious agent is seen as depending upon the T-cell subsets activated and the cytokines produced by them and other cells, such as macrophages, B cells and basophils. Experts contributions shed new light on how TH0 cells are preferentially activated and differentiated into TH1 or TH2 subsets; TH1 and TH2 cells and their cytokines induce both protective immune responses and adverse immune reactions to infectious agents; cytokines modulate the response of infectious diseases to chemotherapy; and cytokines, their receptors and antagonist, and anti-cytokine antibodies can be used in therapy. Those working in the fields of immunology, parasitology, microbiology and vaccine development particularly if they are interested in tropical diseases, will find the volume an invaluable source of information.

Only recently a new range of agents has become available that are capable of stimulating and regulating host defense systems against microorganisms. Interleukins, interferons and haematopoietic growth factors are now being produced by the biotechnology industry and are being evaluated for clinical use in this area. Cytokines in the Treatment of Infectious Diseases provides a unique, up-to-date survey of this research area. The use of cytokines in a series of (groups of) infectious diseases is discussed in twelve succinct chapters, from model to clinical study, written by twenty-five expert authors from the world's key institutes in this area. The book is aimed at microbiologists, immunologists, molecular biologists, cell biologists and other scientific disciplines in the field of biotherapy. It is required reading for physicians dealing with infectious diseases who wish to keep up to date with the developments in this field.

Cytokines written by Masoud H. Manjili and has been published by Nova Science Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-06-01 with Cytokines categories.

Cells of the immune system communicate with each other, and respond to abnormal conditions by releasing soluble proteins, named cytokines. Abnormal or dangerous conditions include infection, trauma and injury, neurological disorders, and cancer. The balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines can comfort or exacerbate the symptoms in these diseases. This book focuses on counter-regulatory and the role of cytokines in different diseases. The goal is to understand contribution of cytokines in the progression of the disease as well as therapeutic potential of cytokines in the treatment of the disease by understanding cytokine counter-regulation.
