In Indonesian Cinema after the New Order: Going Mainstream, Thomas Barker presents the first systematic and most comprehensive history of contemporary Indonesian cinema. The book focuses on a 20-year period of great upheaval from modest, indie beginnings, through mainstream appeal, to international recognition. More than a simple narrative, Barker contributes to cultural studies and sociological research by defining the three stages of an industry moving from state administration; through needing to succeed in local pop culture, specifically succeeding with Indonesian youth, to remain financially viable; until it finally realizes international recognition as an art form. This “going mainstream” paradigm reaches far beyond film history and forms a methodology for understanding the market in which all cultural industries operate, where the citizen-consumer (not the state) becomes sovereign. Indonesia presents a particularly interesting case because “going mainstream” has increasingly meant catering to the demands of new Islamic piety movements. It has also meant working with a new Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, established in 2011. Rather than a simplified creative world many hoped for, Indonesian filmmaking now navigates a new complex of challenges different to those faced before 1998. Barker sees this industry as a microcosm of the entire country: democratic yet burdened by authoritarian legacies, creative yet culturally contested, international yet domestically shaped. “This is a significant piece of scholarly contribution informed by an extensive range of interviews with industry insiders. Mohammad Natsir lahir di Alahan Panjang, Sumatera Barat, 17 Juli 1908 dan wafat di Jakarta 6 Februari 1993. Pendidikan Islam diperolehnya sejak kecil dari orang tua dan lingkungannya. Pendidikan formal di HIS Solok, MULO (1923- 1927), dan AMS di Bandung (1930). Orang sering mengenal Natsir sebagai tokoh dakwah dan politik. Kiprahnya dalam dua hal ini sangat bermakna dan menjadi teladan. Tetapi, tidak banyak yang mengenal Natsir sebagai seorang tokoh Pendidikan Islam. Padahal, gagasan dan kiprahnya di bidang ini sangat fenomenal. Natsir bukan hanya politisi handal. Dia adalah seorang pejuang pendidikan yang layak disejajarkan dengan tokoh-tokoh seperti K.H. Ahmad Dahlan, Ki Hajar Dewantara dan sebagainya. Selain amat concern dengan nasib pendidikan rakyat jelata yang tak punya hak pendidikan di masanya, saat menjadi Perdana Menteri, salah satu prestasi Natsir adalah keputusan bersama Menteri Agama, Wahid Hasyim, untuk mewajibkan pelajaran agama di sekolah-sekolah umum. Ketika terhalang aktif di dunia politik pun, Natsir terus berkhidmat pada dunia pendidikan melalui Dewan Da’wah Islamiyah Indonesia (DDII). Buku yang ditulis oleh Buya Mas’oed Abidin ini merupakan upaya untuk menimba mata air keteladanan dari seorang Natsir. Memang secara sistematika dan teknik penulisan, buku ini memiliki kelemahan, karena merupakan himpunan dari berbagai tulisan dan artikel yang belum secara utuh disatukan menjadi satu kesatuan karya tulis. Akan tetapi, kedekatan Buya Mas’oed Abidin dengan Mohammad Natsir menjadi nilai tambah yang bermakna bagi buku ini. Sebab, beliau adalah salah satu saksi hidup tentang keteladanan Mohammad Natsir. Mudahmudahan kita dapat mengambil berbagai hikmah dari buku ini.
