This volume is part of the recent interest in the study of religion and popular media culture (cinema in particular), but it strongly differs from most of this work in this maturing discipline. Contrary to most other edited volumes and monographs on film and religion, Moralizing Cinema will not focus upon films (cf. the representation of biblical figures, religious themes in films, the fidelity question in movies), but rather look beyond the film text, content or aesthetics, by concentrating on the cinema-related actions, strategies and policies developed by the Catholic Church and Catholic organizations in order to influence cinema. Whereas the key role of Catholics in cinema has been well studied in the USA (cf. literature on the Legion of Decency and on the Catholic influenced Production Code Administration), the issue remains unexplored for other parts of the world. The book includes case studies on Argentina, Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Luxemburg, the Netherlands, and the USA.

The changing attitude of Catholic culture towards modernity After decades of a problematic, if not plainly hostile, approach to modernity by Catholic culture, the 1960s marked the beginning of a new era. As the Church employed a more positive approach to the world, voices in the Catholic milieu embraced a radical perspective, channeling the need for social justice for the poor and the oppressed. The alternative and complementary world views of ‘universalism’ and ‘liberation’ would drive the engagement of Catholics for generations to come, shaping the idea of international community in Catholic culture. The Oxford Handbook of Italian Politics provides a comprehensive look at the political life of one of Europe's most exciting and turbulent democracies. Under the hegemonic influence of Christian Democracy in the early post-World War II decades, Italy went through a period of rapid growth and political transformation. In part this resulted in tumult and a crisis of governability; however, it also gave rise to innovation in the form of Eurocommunism and new forms of political accommodation. The great strength of Italy lay in its constitution; its great weakness lay in certain legacies of the past. Organized crime—popularly but not exclusively associated with the mafia—is one example. A self-contained and well entrenched 'caste' of political and economic elites is another. These weaknesses became apparent in the breakdown of political order in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This ushered in a combination of populist political mobilization and experimentation with electoral systems design, and the result has been more evolutionary than transformative. Italian politics today is different from what it was during the immediate post-World War II period, but it still shows many of the influences of the past.

Il Sessantotto fu certamente una festa, un anno multicolore, come i vestiti indossati dai ragazzi e dalle ragazze che nelle scuole superiori abbandonarono cravatte e grembiuli, e come le appartenenze che nelle università si mescolarono e si confusero allo stesso modo di striscioni e bandiere. Fu un anno sfacciato e divertente, ma anche acidamente irriverente, un anno irrispettoso come le scritte sui muri e gli slogan dei cortei. Molti giovani provenienti dalle parrocchie e dalle associazioni cattoliche si immersero come i loro coetanei in quella marea inaspettata, vivendo un’esperienza di liberazione e di autonomia, di impegno totalizzante e di soggettività creativa. I saggi raccolti in questo libro ricostruiscono in modo originale e documentato il ruolo dei cattolici europei nelle contestazioni studentesche. Il volume si inserisce così nel dibattito pubblico sul Sessantotto, chiarendo le scelte dei cattolici che parteciparono alle manifestazioni e le reazioni degli ambienti politici ed ecclesiastici di fronte all’imprevista ondata di proteste.

Si può parlare di un «Sessantotto cattolico»? E se è esistito, è stato solo una componente della contestazione giovanile, irrilevante e risucchiata dall’attrazione a sinistra, oppure si è trattato di un fenomeno consistente, caratterizzato da dinamiche specifiche e ramificato a livello europeo, se non su scala globale? Quali ne sono i riferimenti culturali, le reti di collegamento, i momenti e i luoghi in cui si è sviluppata una riflessione comune? Esiste davvero, insomma, una sorta di filo rosso che unisce gli studenti della JEC parigina e gli universitari cattolici che a Madrid scendono in piazza contro Franco, le avanguardie cattoliche della contestazione belga e gli studenti italiani che si sono mobilitati sin dall’inizio degli anni Sessanta? A tali interrogativi vuole rispondere questo libro, che analizza le direttrici di marcia che hanno portato i giovani cattolici europei «verso il Sessantotto», considerando un arco temporale ampio, che comprende il passaggio tra anni Cinquanta e Sessanta e gli orientamenti del mondo studentesco europeo del decennio che precede la contestazione. Italia, Francia, Belgio, Olanda, Germania, Austria, Spagna: paesi che hanno avuto un Sessantotto spesso dirompente, alimentato proprio dalla gioventù cattolica. Gli studenti cattolici hanno in parte anticipato le istanze di contestazione, dal protagonismo generazionale alla vocazione antiautoritaria, declinandola in ambito ecclesiale e sociale. Come i loro compagni, anzi ancor prima dei loro compagni, hanno vissuto i lunghi anni Sessanta come un anticipo di contestazione, mettendo in sinergia, non senza contraddizioni, tensioni spirituali, esperienze associative e aspirazioni sociali.

A partire da un ampio ventaglio di fonti documentarie, in gran parte inedite, il volume ricostruisce la genesi e lo sviluppo del movimento di Gioventù Studentesca. Tale realtà, nata come esperimento di apostolato di ambiente dell’Azione Cattolica milanese (sulla scorta dell’esperienza della Jeunesse Étudiante Chrétienne francese), arrivò a rappresentare per le sue peculiarità metodologiche e la sua capacità di attrarre studenti spesso lontani dalla Chiesa uno dei più significativi e discussi fermenti dell’AC negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta. La vicenda di Gioventù Studentesca, fondata da Giancarlo Brasca nel 1945 e rifondata da don Luigi Giussani tra il 1953 e il 1954, si inserisce in un mondo cattolico in cui iniziavano ad affiorare i primi segni di una crisi che avrebbe raggiunto il suo culmine alcuni anni più tardi. Da questo punto di vista, il volume apre nuove prospettive per comprendere i cambiamenti che hanno investito la gioventù cattolica tra il Concilio e la contestazione.
