Fifteen papers focus on the active and dynamic uses of images during the first millennium AD. They bring together an international group of scholars who situate the periods visual practices within their political, religious, and social contexts. The contributors present a diverse range of evidence, including mosaics, sculpture, and architecture from all parts of the Mediterranean, from Spain in the west to Jordan in the east. Contributions span from the depiction of individuals on funerary monuments through monumental epigraphy, Constantines expropriation and symbolic re-use of earlier monuments, late antique collections of Classical statuary, and city personifications in mosaics to the topic of civic prosperity during the Theodosian period and dynastic representation during the Umayyad dynasty. Together they provide new insights into the central role of visual culture in the constitution of late antique societies.

Il Grande Gatsby , tratto dal celebre romanzo omonimo di F. Scott Fitzgerald, è stato recentemente (2013) riproposto sul grande schermo, per la regia di Baz Luhrman, interpretato da Leonardo DiCaprio. Quest’ultima, com’è noto, non è l’unica rielaborazione filmica dell’opera: una prima pellicola muta, andata perduta, vide la luce già nel 1926 (un anno dopo la pubblicazione del romanzo), la seconda nel 1949, e la terza uscì nel 1974, con Robert Redford e Mia Farrow nel ruolo dei protagonisti. Nonostante la versione del 1974 si ricordi come la più famosa, non ebbe un gran successo, infatti la critica bocciò quasi all’unanimità quella pellicola. Attraverso il testo qui proposto ci si interroga non solo sul motivo per il quale un romanzo degli anni Venti fu riproposto negli anni Settanta, dopo già ben due fallimenti cinematografici, ma anche sui motivi per cui anche questo terzo tentativo, che la Paramount aveva già preventivamente annoverato fra i suoi grandi successi, fu inesorabilmente un flop, nonostante la presenza di un affermato sceneggiatore quale Francis Ford Coppola. Attraverso uno studio sociologico vengono ripercorsi gli “umori” della Storia degli anni in cui videro la luce sia l’opera che la sua trasposizione filmica. Vengono inoltre analizzate le scelte tecniche operate dal regista, dovute alla sua interpretazione della trama e dei personaggi. Questa analisi può rappresentare lo spunto di partenza per un’eventuale critica relativa al successo o al fallimento del nuovo film.
