A distanza di sei anni dall'edizione del volume S. Giulia di Brescia: gli scavi dal 1980 al 1992. Reperti preromani, romani e alto medievali esce ora la pubblicazione dedicata alle domus romane messe in luce nelle ricerche effettuate in quegli anni. Ricerche, ricordiamo, motivate dai lavori di restauro del complesso monastico destinato ad ospitare il Museo della Città e che hanno pertanto risentito delle esigenze di progettazione e di cantiere, ma che hanno consentito di ricostruire uno spaccato significativo della storia più antica di Brescia. Queste pubblicazioni e il preannunciato terzo volume dedicato all'età basso medievale e rinascimentale danno conto della messe di nuovi dati acquisiti nelle indagini archeologiche e del loro straordinario interesse scientifico. Lo studio del complesso di abitazioni romane affrontato in questo secondo volume appare di grande importanza per la vastità dell'area indagata, quasi quattromila metri quadrati: una situazione privilegiata, che non trova sinora riscontro nella stessa Brescia, ma anche nella maggior parte delle città romane dell'Italia settentrionale. Oltre all'ampiezza della zona indagata, un altro elemento di particolare interesse è l'ubicazione dell'isolato coinvolto negli scavi, in una parte centrale della città, a nord del decumano massimo di via Musei, accanto all'area monumentale pubblica, un settore quindi destinato nel tessuto urbano a un'edilizia residenziale di una certa rilevanza. Ma l'aspetto di maggiore interesse è la possibilità di uno studio degli edifici nel loro completo contesto, come difficilmente capitava in passato, quando ci si occupava solo degli elementi considerati più rilevanti artisticamente, quali ad esempio i pavimenti musivi, sovente strappati dalla loro sede e studiati isolatamente, estrapolandoli dall'insieme, oppure gli apparati decorativi parietali che nei casi migliori erano presi in esame solo nelle parti che rivestivano un maggiore pregio per le raffigurazioni presenti. Qui vi è stata la possibilità di un'indagine globale che ha cercato di ricostruire gli edifici nei loro diversi vani, articolati intorno a spazi aperti o porticati, tenendo conto delle modifiche e dei rimaneggiamenti via via apportati nel corso del tempo ad alcune parti delle abitazioni, che sino al V secolo appaiono funzionanti e curate con una manutenzione continua. Ma anche l'analisi delle fasi successive, di destrutturazione di questi edifici, di crollo e demolizione e di ricostruzione nelle stesse aree, ma con diversa organizzazione spaziale, di nuovi edifici in tecniche povere, case o capanne a uno o due vani, restituisce elementi fondamentali per la lettura e la ricostruzione della città in età altomedievale. L'elaborazione dei dati di scavo e lo studio della documentazione emersa dalle indagini hanno richiesto tempi lunghi. Si può citare ad esempio lo studio della decorazione parietale, che ha avuto necessità di un paziente intervento preliminare di ricomposizione dei numerosissimi frammenti di intonaco dipinto trovato in giacitura secondaria, talora in fase di crollo della parete o molto più spesso utilizzato in riempimenti. I risultati di questo attento e minuzioso lavoro appaiono di grande rilievo e costituiscono di certo una base fondamentale per i futuri studi sulla pittura romana di Brescia. Dopo la realizzazione del Museo della Città in Santa Giulia e l'apertura al pubblico dell'area delle domus dell'Ortaglia nel 2003, la pubblicazione dei risultati delle indagini archeologiche aggiunge nuovi elementi di conoscenza dell'area del complesso museale. Questi potrebbero essere la base per ripensare in futuro, nuovamente, a un progetto di musealizzazione degli scavi, ricoperti dopo la loro esecuzione per motivi conservativi e per permettere il completamento dei lavori. La potenzialità archeologica dell'area di Santa Giulia e di quella forense, vero cuore della città antica, è enorme e l'interesse e l'impegno dell'Amministrazione municipale per la valorizzazione di questa zona sono ben testimoniati dai recenti interventi museali e dai lavori in corso nell'area del Capitolium e del Teatro. Anche la pubblicazione degli interventi di scavo e l'analisi delle testimonianze emerse si inseriscono in quest'ottica di promozione del patrimonio culturale e sono la base per programmare i futuri interventi in questa che può essere considerata, a livello nazionale, una delle più prestigiose aree archeologiche urbane. Core tourist sites for the classical world are the ruins of those many and scattered examples of 'lost' and abandoned towns - from Pompeii to Timgad to Ephesus and Petra. Usually studied for their peaks and growth, rarely are their ends explored in detail, to consider the processes of loss and also to trace their 'afterlives', when they were often robbed for materials even if still hosting remnant populations.This volume breaks new ground by examining the phenomenon of urban loss and abandonment from Roman to medieval times across the former Roman Empire. Through a series of case studies two main aspects are examined: firstly, the sequences and chronologies of loss of sites, roles, structures, people, identity; and secondly the methodologies of study of these sites - from early discoveries and exploitation of such sites to current archaeological and scientific approaches (notably excavation, urban survey, georadar and geophysics) to studying these crucial centres and their fates.
