Dalle figure del reale è una raccolta di saggi sulla figuratività che ricerca, attraversando diversi territori e campi disciplinari, le figure in grado di produrre senso, di rappresentare la condizione contemporanea e le sue mutazioni. Antonino Terranova, Roma 1942, è professore ordinario di Composizione architettonica e Progettazione urbana presso la Prima Facoltà di Architettura "Ludovico Quaroni" e direttore del DiAR, Dipartimento di Architettura nell'Ateneo Federato delle scienze umane dell'Arte e dell'Ambiente dell' Università degli studi di Roma "Sapienza". È nel comitato direttivo di "Rassegna di Architettura e Urbanistica" e dell'ANCSA (Associazione Nazionale Centri Storico- Artistici). Whatever 'ugliness' is, it remains a problematic category in architectural aesthetics – alternately vilified and appropriated, used either to shock or to invert conventions of architecture. This book presents sixteen new scholarly essays which rethink ugliness in recent architecture – from Brutalism to eclectic postmodern architectural productions – and together offer a diverse reappraisal of the history and theory of postmodern architecture and design. The essays address both broad theoretical questions on ugliness and postmodern aesthetics, as well as more specific analyses of significant architectural examples dating from the last decades of the twentieth century. The book attends to the diverse relations between the aesthetic register of ugliness and closely connected aesthetic concepts such as the monstrous, the ordinary, disgust, the excessive, the grotesque, the interesting, the impure and the sublime. This volume does not simply document the history of a postmodern anti-aesthetic through case studies. Instead, it aims to shed light on aesthetic problems that have been largely overlooked in the agenda of architectural theory. This book answers in detail the questions: How did postmodern architects appropriate troublesome contradictions bound to the raw ugliness of the real? How have the ugly and the antiaesthetic been a productive force in postmodern architecture? How can ugliness be of value to architecture? And how can architecture make good use of ugliness?

I vuoti che il libro descrive sono spazi prodotti attraverso un processo di sottrazione, che estrae la materia sostituendola con lo spazio. È una modalità compositiva e costruttiva arcaica, riscoperta dal Moderno e utilizzata oggi da molti artisti e architetti contemporanei. Forme del vuoto indaga e ri-conosce i diversi caratteri che questo spazio assume. Esso si colloca tra interno ed esterno, sui bordi, nei luoghi di confine dell'architettura. La sua presenza muta profondamente gli oggetti architettonici, li trasforma in relazionali, capaci di tessere molteplici interazioni con i soggetti che li abitano e con i paesaggi urbani che li circondano, di produrre nuovi significati attraverso la modificazione di tipi e spazi consolidati nella storia dell'architettura e della città, di generare nuove possibilità del sentire. Le diverse forme che il vuoto sottratto assume sono indagate attraverso la descrizione e la rappresentazione diagrammatica delle opere che, messe in sequenza, costruiscono un percorso, dall'interno verso l'esterno, che intende mostrare il progressivo processo di contaminazione dell'oggetto architettonico contemporaneo con il contesto in cui si colloca, la perdita di significato delle tradizionali contrapposizioni pubblico-privato, aperto-chiuso, figura-sfondo e la loro sostituzione con categorie intermedie che rispecchiano la volontà relazionale di molta architettura contemporanea. From a leading art historian of Renaissance Italy, a compelling account of the artistic and cultural impact of the sack of sixteenth-century Rome In this illustrated account of the sack of Rome as a cultural and artistic phenomenon, André Chastel reveals the historical ambiguities of preceding events and the traumatic contrast between the flourishing world of art under Pope Clement VII and the city after it was looted by the troops of Emperor Charles V in 1527. Chastel illuminates the cultural repercussions of the humiliation of Rome, emphasizing the spread or “Europeanization” of the Mannerist style by artists who fled the city—including Parmigianino, Rosso, Polidoro, Peruzzi, and Perino del Vaga. At the same time, Clement’s critics used the new media of printing and engraving to win over the people with caricatures and satirical writings, while Rome responded with monumental works affirming the legitimacy of the pope’s temporal power. Da diversi anni si è giunti a ritenere che l’Antico Testamento sia stato scritto non da un solo uomo che si riteneva dovesse essere stato Mosè, che doveva essere stato un testimone dei fatti da lui descritti, ma che la Sua compilazione sia avvenuta secoli dopo gli avvenimenti narrati da una scuola di pensiero all’interno della Chiesa primitiva ebraica. Successivamente i risultati delle ricerche archeologiche confortate delle datazioni al radiocarbonio hanno dimostrato che fosse necessaria una riscrittura della storia d’Israele, riscrittura che comunque non incrinava la tesi che uno stato d’Israele potente e unitario fosse realmente esistito sotto Davide e Salomone, e che fosse realmente esistito un ‘Primo Tempio’. Ma la più recente critica mette in dubbio anche il concetto stesso di regno unito, mettendo così in crisi il racconto biblico, negando anche un collegamento tra i regni Israele e ai tempi della loro nascita. Ma l’autore, dopo una lunga ricerca ed in base a quanto da lui rilevato, ipotizza che questo non sia corretto, in quanto ai tempi dei re Davide e Salomone esisteva effettivamente un potente regno di Giuda, ma che non risiedeva a Gerusalemme, così come Salomone fece costruire un monumentale Tempio, ma sempre non a Gerusalemme. L’autore ritiene che questi due re vissero e regnarono in Egitto, e che, come i loro antenati Patriarchi, fossero dei faraoni appartenenti al potente impero Hyksos, che fondarono la XV dinastia ed anche la XXII, entrambe governate da sovrani appartenevano alla discendenza di Terach, il padre di Abramo. Questi importanti personaggi che infine riuscirono ad impadronirsi del potere in Egitto dovevano già avere conquistato un vasto territorio che andava dalla Mesopotamia al fiume Nilo, comprendenti anche il regno di Edom in Transgiordania, dove governarono Seir, che corrispondeva ad Abramo, il figlio Ismaele ed Esaù, che ereditò il trono prendendo in sposa una figlia di Ismaele, che portava una titolatura che comprendeva Maaca-Bashemat.
