Das Gymnasion zählte zu den öffentlichen Einrichtungen, über die eine Stadt im griechisch-hellenistischen Kulturraum verfügen mußte, um den Rang einer Polis beanspruchen zu können. Obwohl einzelne Gymnasien bereits seit archaischer Zeit in griechischen Städten belegt sind, bildete sich das Gymnasion erst in hellenistischer Zeit als öffentlich verwaltete und architektonisch gestaltete Anlage aus. Die Beiträge des vorliegenden Bandes thematisieren die ideellen und institutionellen Grundlagen und die Funktionen der Gymnasien sowie ihren Beitrag zur Hellenisierung. Dabei wird insbesondere die Übernahme neuer Funktionen hervorgehoben und nachgewiesen, wie sich diese städtische Institution, die ursprünglich einen Ort adliger Muße und sportlichen Wettbewerbs bildete, auch zum Ort militärischer Ausbildung entwickelte und sich schließlich in ein exklusives Bildungsinstitut verwandelte.

Jahrhundert v. Chr. einen Wandel und hatte nach Peter Scholz eine uberragende Bedeutung in der hellenistischen Stadt." Es hatte vielfaltige und umfangreiche Funktionen, die das Leben in der Polis mitpragten. Insofern muss sich auch die Frage nach dem Leiter des Gymnasions stellen. Der hellenistische Gymnasiarch muss an der Spitze dieser Institution eine wichtige Rolle einnehmen. Diese Arbeit soll sich daher mit der Frage beschaftigen, welche Stellung der Gymnasiarch als Vorsteher der elementaren Institution Gymnasion einnahm. Dazu soll zuerst auf das Gymnasion in hellenistischer Zeit eingegangen werden um eine Basis fur die Untersuchung der Rolle ihres Leiters zu schaffen. Hier sollen kompakt vor allem die Entwicklung und die Funktionen der Institution dargelegt werden. Im dritten Kapitel soll als zunachst auf das Aufgabenfeld der Gymnasiarchen eingegangen werden, um ihre Stellung greifbar zu machen. Anschliessend soll dann die Finanzierung der Gymnasien im Zentrum stehen, auch hier liegt der Fokus auf der Rolle des Gymnasiarchen. Um die Ergebnisse anhand eines konkreten Beispiels exemplarisch darzustellen, soll danach auf der Ehrenbeschluss fur den Gymnasiarchen Lysons in Xanthos untersucht und die Arbeit schlussendlich in einem abschliessenden Fazit zusammengefasst werden."

Peter Scholz spricht der Institution des Gymnasions in der Einführung des von ihm und Daniel Kah herausgegebenen Bandes „Das hellenistische Gymnasion“ eine „überragende Bedeutung in der hellenistischen Stadt“ zu. Folglich musste auch sein Leiter, der Gymnasiarch, ein gewichtige Stellung in der Polis einnehmen. Diese Arbeit soll die Kennzeichen und Merkmale der Führungsschicht der Gymnasiarchen in der hellenistischen Zeit herausarbeiten. Im ersten Kapitel werden zunächst die Institution der Gymnasiarchie und ihre Bedeutung in der hellenistischen Polis, sowie die Aufgabe und Funktion des Gymnasiarchen allgemein dargestellt. In this fully illustrated volume Fikret Yeg l describes the complex from the palaestra of the east through the richly decorated Marble Court to the vast swimming pool, lofty halls, and hot baths, including analysis of the excavation, evidence for structural systems, roofing, vaulting, and decoration, and the significance of building inscriptions. The author traces the building history from its completion in the second century through five centuries of renovation and redecoration.
