Die Welt vom Wasser aus: in der kartographischen Medialisierung der Meere bildete sich eine neue Sicht auf die Welt heraus. Auf den Meeren formte sich die Welt zur Einheit. Unter den Instrumenten und Medien, die seit dem beginnenden 19. Jahrhundert die Verdichtung transozeanischer Bewegungen möglich und wahrnehmbar machten, trugen Karten entscheidende Bedeutung. Seekarten, die sich den Präzisionsmaßgaben einer messenden und standardisierenden Geographie verschrieben, erlaubten es europäischen Seefahrern, Küsten zu erreichen, die sich vormals nur unter kaum vertretbarem Risiko ansteuern ließen. Zugleich ermöglichten Karten, die die Meere zur Herstellung von Übersicht in Atlanten, in Zeitschriften oder etwa an den Wänden von Kontoren zeigten und in immer neue Relationen zum kontinentalen Festland setzten, die Ausbildung einer Vorstellung von der Welt als eines durch die Ozeane verbundenen Möglichkeitsraums. "Jenseits des Terrazentrismus" lädt dazu ein, die Formierung der globalen Welt vom Wasser aus zu betrachten – und von dessen Medialisierung in Karten. In geschichts-, literatur- und medienwissenschaftlichen Beiträgen regt das Buch eine maritim reflektierte Globalisierungsforschung an, die das Geschehen auf und die Beschäftigung mit den Meeren als konstitutiv für die Herausbildung von Globalität begreift.
