Data Networking is a capability that allows users to combine separate data bases, telecommunication systems, and specialised computer operations into a single integrated system, so that data communication can be handled as easily as voice messages. Data communications is the problem of getting information from one place to another reliably (secure both from channel disruptions and deliberate interference) while conforming to user requirements. IP (Internet protocol) is the central pillar of the Internet and was designed primarily for internetworking as being a simple protocol almost any network could carry. In Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), within a given time frame a particular user is allowed to transmit within a given time slot. This technique is used in most of the second-generation digital mobile communication systems. In Europe the system is known as GSM, in USA as DAMPS and in Japan as MPT. In Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) every user is using a distinct code so that it can occupy the same frequency bandwidth at the same time with other users and still can be separated on the basis of low correlation between the codes. These systems like IS-95 in the USA are also developed and standardized within the second generation of the mobile communication systems. CDMA systems within a cellular network can provide higher capacity and for this reason they become more and more attractive. At this moment it seems that both TDMA and CDMA remain viable candidates for application in future systems. The current telephone networks are mostly based on the circuit-switched networks, whereas the Internet is mainly based on the packetswitched networks, which are also called IP networks. However, there is a strong tendency to combine both of these networks, which points to the direction that the IP networks are going to replace services provided by current telephone networks. This would eventually mean that IP networks might replace the telephone networks, in the future. Following are some reasons why IP networks seem to replace the circuit-switched networks: - First of all, the IP networks provide cheaper communication. Considering that the Internet access is nearly free, the cost advantage of IP networks gets clearer 25]. - Secondly, IP networks provide the ability of integrating the data and voice applications, and even some other applications, like video-conferencing, integrated voice mail, e-mail, and the like 26]. - Another important reason is that IP networks allow open implementation of end systems. With a reasonable programming knowledge everybody could implement an end system for IP networks.
