Excerpt from The Island of Cuba That portion of Baron Humboldt's Personal Narrative of his travels with Mons. Bonpland in the equinoctial regions of America, which relates to the Island of Cuba, has been published as a separate work both in the French and Spanish languages; but I believe no complete version has ever been presented in English. The following translation is from an excellent rendering of the original work into Spanish, which modestly gives only the initials of the translator; D. J. B. De V. Y. M. I have been stimulated to undertake this labor by the oft-repeated request that I would state which is the best book on Cuba, and by the fact that a long continued residence in the island, and a study of its condition and resources, have convinced me that Baron Humboldt's work is the best that has been written on the subject. In order to bring the information in this volume as nearly as possible down to the present time, I have added notes, which are placed in brackets in the body of the text, or without signature at the foot of the page, as seemed most conducive to a clear exposition of the present condition of Cuba. The notes of Baron Humboldt have the signature H. Affixed in the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from A History of Slavery in Cuba: 1511 to 1868 His exposition is the first part of my work in the history of slavery in Cuba. I have endeavoured here to point out salient features of the Spanish policy governing the slave trade in Cuba. My aim has been to show the causes of the trade in Cuba, its effects on Cuba, Spain, and, so far as they are closely related to the island, on the world; I have then gone into considerable detail in order to show the nature of the trade and the times. In doing this I have chosen to make large use of extracts for the purpose of bringing the reader as close as possible to the work of the writers themselves. Furthermore, political, social, and economic situations bearing on or influenced by the trade have been explained as fully as space would allow. Many things will, I feel sure, remain obscure or imperfectly treated; especially so, because I have not been able to treat of the domestic slave regime, with which I hope to supplement the contents of this book. Excerpt from Gan-Eden: Or, Pictures of Cuba In calling Cuba a "Garden of Delight," I only express the sum of those bright memories, of a genial nature, and of more genial human friends, which I brought away from the topics. The title "Picture of Cuba," indicates my intention in composing this volume. I have not attempted to write a history, or a gazetteer of Cuba, I have only sought to reproduce the sights and thoughts which passed before the eyes, and through the mind of one whose interest in Cuba is by no means recent, and who tried to see and to think for himself. Many mistakes of detail, I must have made. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
