De leugen van de kaketoe vertelt het verhaal van vier generaties vrouwen in een lange brief vanhoofdpersoon Melanie Fleur aan haar grootmoeder. Aan haar kan ze de geheimen van haar leven toevertrouwen omdat ze zeker weet dat haar grootmoeder ze niet zal onthouden. Marion Bloem construeert Melanies geschiedenis en identiteit uit fragmenten van de levens van de grootmoeder, de moeder, de tantes en andere vrouwen uit haar jeugd. Bij voorbeeld oma, het kind van een Pruisisch soldaat in Atjeh en een Javaanse dienstbode; tante Melinda, die al op haar dertiende jaar wordt uitgehuwelijkt; de altijd vrolijke tante Jossa die zich moeiteloos schikt in haar ongehuwde staat; tante Fuut, die bang is voor de krachten in haar eigen lichaam en fanatiek vasthoudt aan haar geloof. De moeder is het slachtoffer van een strenge opvoeding en probeert haar dochter te drillen. Stuk voor stuk dragen deze vrouwen bij aan het karakter van Melanie, die hartstochtelijk verliefd is op het leven. Op authentieke wijze roept Marion Bloem het beeld op van een vrouw van veertig die op de kentering van haar leven orde probeert te scheppen in haar jeugdherinneringen, haar huwelijk, haar relaties, haar erotische beleving. De roman is lyrisch, heftig, direct en geladen. Humor en zelfspot ontbreken echter niet.
