Ten behoeve van vrouwen, want aan De minotaurus onzer zeden werden alleen vrouwen geofferd. En tot aansporing van vrouwen, want vrouwen moesten het monster vooral ook zelf te lijf gaan. Tijdens Multatuli’s leven, maar ook nog lang nadien, zijn er vrouwen én mannen geweest die zijn ideeën daadwerkelijk als aansporing hebben gelezen. In de strijd van multatuliaanse feministen als Mina Kruseman, Jan Versluys, Titia van der Tuuk, Wilhelmina Drucker, Raden Adjeng Kartini en Carel Victor Gerritsen is menige statenbijbel en borduurnaald gesneuveld. Maar daar kwamen wel meer rechten en grotere autonomie van vrouwen voor in de plaats!

The papers collected in this volume study the function and meaning of narrative texts from a variety of perspectives. De auteur gaat daarbij in op de moeizame ontwikkeling van het parlement en politieke partijen, het ontstaan van verzuiling en verzorgingsstaat, de opkomst van een economisch gestuurd conservatisme en, ten slotte, de doorbraak van het populisme en algeheel pessimisme over de toekomst van Nederland. In een kleurrijke stijl laat De Rooy zien dat staatsvorming allesbehalve een vanzelfsprekende en afgeronde ontwikkeling is.
